I did right by it. Or, as right as I could.
I got home, dug a small hole next to the tree nxt to my apartment, moving its remains there, said some words, filled the hole, hoped for mercy and grace.
It's never enough.

Right outside my apartment there was a dead sparrow. I left the apt, got on my bike, rode 5sec and saw it. It looked like it got its head stuck in the metal grating on the street. I hopped off my bike and tried to gently pull it out, unsure if it was dead or not. I got it out. It was still warm and flexible, but motionless, eyes closed. It had not been dead long. Maybe it broke its neck panicking, trying to get its head out of the hole in the grating. Had I left 2min earlier, I might’ve saved it. Yes, I know it was not my fault it died. But I saw its body. I might have been able to do something had I left moments earlier. Once again, I could have saved a life had I acted better or in time. But I didn’t. And it’s dead now. Forever gone. And now I go teach kids and have to pretend the world is happy and lovely so they can enjoy a tiny slice of their childhood. I hate it here.
