I’m a chemistry professor & a hearing person learning ASL (so I can support D/hh students). I like cats and playing Destiny 2 an unreasonable amount. I only RT images with alt text. If I like your un-alt-texted art I may add a description in a reply (she)

About 15 lions in a sausage tree in the central Serengeti. Some are climbing the trunk, others are sleeping on branches. It's likely they took refuge in the tree to avoid insects at ground level.

To be clear, the (exterior) of the library hasn’t changed. But they have replaced the library parking lot with several new buildings! (Poor grad students will have to walk even further 😭)

It has been a minute (15+ years) since I finished my PhD here, so it’s been a mix of nostalgia/oddness to bring my nephews for a visit & see all the changes to campus

In perhaps the Most Philadelphia thing ever, I've recently learned that my 7 y.o. hard-of-hearing kid thinks the middle finger is ASL for "honking the horn" 🙈🙈

I am not making this up: the dude on our gate microphone at LAX today called boarding for “Group A as in Apple-bottom jeans” and “Group B as in Boots with the fur”

it's not just that the policies they pursue happen to neatly fit academic analyses of fascism by respected scholars in the field (although they do); it's that they are constantly and unambiguously signaling that they _specifically_ admire and seek to emulate the literal historical nazis

Goddamn. What a sobering and poignant piece of conceptual art. What an amazing artist.

as the inventor of slicing a sandwich at a deli just enough that it looks like you have two clean halves but the bottom slice tears in a fucked up way when you try to separate the halves, i am honored to be nominated by our beloved president to head the food and drug administration

it's a good thing I don't actually play the looter-shooter for the loot (sincere) or I would be extra bummed that I'm on vacation during this event

Alt:
1) sister (the Mayor) looking at Erika’s shirt, which reads “political liability,” with a jokey frowny face
2) the Mayor standing behind a food-laden table, smiling while looking at her phone
3) Erika squatting down in grass next to rocks, holding a long stick, her back to the camera

I love how similar our approach is! Have you ever attended the Grading Conference? (online only conference, in June) I’ve learned so much from like-minded colleagues over the years there.

I used to teach at a 4 yr PUI and had classes ~45-60 students (lec only; labs taught by adjuncts). Now at a CC I have classes of 24-28 and I teach them for both lab and lecture. I feel like I’m living the dream

Ugh, that sucks. I’ve tried to make the argument to my colleagues that “you can’t remove all opportunities to cheat, ever, but you can reduce the *motivation* to cheat” but I haven’t had much success. The old ways are familiar ruts worn into the ground, and it’s hard to climb out of the grooves

In my gen chem class (28 students) last fall I had a zero DFW and it felt so damn good. Granted, essentially all students who don’t succeed in my classes it’s bc of outside life factors, not their inability to learn the material, so that semester was just a bit lucky. But still!

Yep, in grad school I had to get permission from my PI to attend pedagogy workshops, and as a new prof *cough* years ago I had to be very intentional about seeking out training

I have changed my grading away from points/partial credit entirely to a proficiency based model (where students get multiple chances to show they’ve learned the material). My exams are harder than they used to be and students are thriving

Any profs who describe their class as a "weed-out" class? This is on you.

Your goal should be for everyone in your class to earn an A. You should support the proposition that STEM is understandable by everyone--because it is.

The very concept of a “weed out” class makes me shudder in contempt. This is also why I believe (and tell anyone who will listen) that fitting grades to a bell curve is a moral failure in education

At home I’m pretty much always listening to something: music, podcast, YouTube, etc. I decided this week at the lake I’m just going to listen to nature and wow what a good decision. Gentle waves, leaves rustling, and birdsong all morning is doing my soul wonders
