You know what was weird last week? I didn’t see anyone fired for quoting words actually spoken by Jane Goodall.

But perhaps most interesting (at least to me) is the performance of weakness. In the Miller-Vance-Trump portrayal, federal agents in Chicago and Portland are vulnerable and in need of federalized defense as 9 Black children attempting to study in an all white school in the south in 1957.

It‘s especially notable that Eisenhower didn’t intervene until after the Arkansas guard was activated by the governor to stop children from attending school. I didn’t catch that nuance when I learned about this in High School.

There is a lot to unpack here but a couple of things stand out:

For one thing, the performative bad faith of segregationists feels deeply resonant in how the Miller-Vance-Trump group speaks and acts. Trump was 11 years old in 1957. The past isn’t past.

First, Eisenhower federalized the entire Arkansas National Guard, taking it out of the Governor’s control. Eisenhower then mobilized the regular US army - the fabled 101st Airborne Division - to escort the children to school.

This was after the southern Democratic Governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus had mobilized the Arkansas guard to prevent those same 9 children from attending school.

68 years ago this fall, the Arkansas national guard was federalized by Republican President Dwight Eisenhower to protect 9 school children as they walked to school In Little Rock Arkansas.
