One of things I wish we might learn faster when ostensibly trying to support marginalized voices is how to suss out when someone wants things to be better for everyone versus when they want to finally have their turn at the helm of violent systems. And I know we've all encountered this.

NYT:
Reactions to the Conflict in the U.S.
Jewish Americans: For many American Jews, there have been too many emotions to process. Young people spoke of fear, shock, solidarity and helplessness, while some progressives said they were feeling abandoned by their left-wing allies.
Palestinian Americans: Palestinians in the United States are dismayed by the violence, but some said that politicians and news outlets were overlooking historical context.
Harvard University: A coalition of more than 30 student groups posted an open letter blaming Israel for the Hamas attacks. Within days, students affiliated with those groups found themselves at the center of a free speech controversy.
no mention of nationwide protests calling for a ceasefire but an entire bullet point for harvard.

One unexpected thing in my qualitative study w natural scientists (one-hour interviews) is how deeply, deeply sad the climate scientists are. They say things like "you have enough information from us, why won't anyone act?" -- the psychological distress these people are enduring is very great.

Reproduction of excerpt from Timothy Snyder's book ON TYRANNY:
"1. Do not obey in advance.
Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do."
As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).

Screenshot of a twitter thread:
"Semitism" is not a real thing, it comes from the word Semitic, referring to a group of languages originating from the Middle East.

In 1867 an antisemitic German journalist started using the term "Anti-Semitic" to refer to prejudice against Jewish people because he perceived us as an inferior race and not just a religious group, and then the term caught on.

But using it with the hyphen would imply that "anti-semitism" is hate against Semites which again is not a real group and it was just a way for antisemites to attempt to classify Jews into this pseudo-scientific racial group which they thought was inferior

We use "antisemitism" without the hyphen to distinguish from the semitic language group (and these hateful origins) when discussing pre against Jewish people.
Lot of conversation about antisemitism this week so just a gentle reminder that we don’t hyphenate the word, because it implies there is such a thing as a “Semitic” race (there isn’t, there’s only Semitic language) - and implying there is a Jewish race is of course deadly for the Jews. More info:

Chart showing emissions from different work models calculated as daily carbon footprint per capita, in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents.
A new study suggests that fully remote workers may produce less than half the climate-warming emissions of people who spend their days in offices.
