I think the issue is where/when to draw the line between “safe to bike/walk” vs “only safe in a car”. As well as how to communicate those nuances during an emergency.

The NTSB graphic on car speeds vs pedestrian fatality rates hides a crucial fact: injury collisions are 10x fatal ones, and can be life altering. Oaklands Highland Hospital is constantly treating traffic victims with broken arms/legs and head trauma. Particularly children and the elderly.

Turns out that NPR and PBS' pandering to the right still didn't save their funding. Maybe there's a lesson here for media that think that tilting to the right will spare them from accusations of "liberal bias."

Not to mention the billions of dollars it takes *annually* to maintain those highways. Dollars that could be put to better use developing more sustainable and economically optimal mass-transit infrastructure. Entire cities literally used to pop-up around train stations.

Gonna say something controversial here: Highways suck everywhere, including in between cities. Why? Because people drive on those highways *into* the cities. Which puts pressure on the city to expand road capacity.
