These multi-lane one way roads were literally meant to be driven on like a freeway, to get to/from an actual freeway faster. The best, hardest and *only* effective remediation is road dieting via bus/bike lanes and/or 2-way conversion.

Drivers don’t care about people outside of cars where Vision Zero succeeded too. The difference is that every level and department of government in those places that succeeded cared.

Was once trying to cross the street at College in Elmwood, when an AC transit driver ran the red heading straight at me as I was stepping off the curb. Had to jump back to avoid the corner of the bus. They’re overworked and trying to stay on schedule, but certain drivers need to be weeded out.

1.) can’t see their face so no shame
2.) this is 100% good advice after a large meal

If you think about it, it’s sort of insane how *few* crashes there are that involve buses/trolleys. Considering they are essentially running on a constant basis every single day.

In fact most of coastal San Diego is filled with ugly 40 year old stucco bungalows, surrounded by the worst land use imaginable.

A fare optimized algorithm doesn’t care about rider tolerances. And congestion preempts more efficient modes of transportation. It’s pretty easy to see how this can be gamed by AV companies.

Uber/Lyft, like taxis, are limited by human driver tolerance for long waits and lines. That doesn’t exist for robots driven by algorithms.

I think they’re saying the opposite. That knowing drivers don’t stop, pedestrians will (hypothetically) yield to drivers until safe (I.e. onus is on the pedestrian). This was more/less the explanation I’ve seen Berkeley traffic engineers.

And the transportation dept, at the behest of the fire dept, has recently standard mandating “mountable” traffic circles with curb heights so low as to be functionally equivalent to paint. And neighbors are unwilling to allow them to remove stop signs. The worst of both worlds.

In Berkeley we have traffic circles *and* 4-way stops in the same intersection 🙃
