On-fire: An artificial dip created by two speed humps spaced in close proximity, to keep the road integrity intact.

The fire chief justified this by saying that there is no counterfactual showing the number of lives _saved_ by fire responses. Without citing a data. Literally โ€œtrust me broโ€

These multi-lane one way roads were literally meant to be driven on like a freeway, to get to/from an actual freeway faster. The best, hardest and *only* effective remediation is road dieting via bus/bike lanes and/or 2-way conversion.

Another day, another billionaire, maga, sacred-native-american-grounds-destroying, oil tycoon stops a bike lane, 5 years in the making.

Drivers donโ€™t care about people outside of cars where Vision Zero succeeded too. The difference is that every level and department of government in those places that succeeded cared.

This goes right to every issue with AI right now.

You basically have 2 sides: the techbros hyping it and doomers only worried about the singularity

No one is dealing with the real existing problems right now, which for AVs is that there are Zero mechanisms holding companies accountable for safety.

Or the one I heard from an SF resident: โ€œThe bike lanes make it dangerous to cross the streetโ€
(the โ€œstreetโ€ being a 4 lane arterial with unprotected lefts and right turn on red).

This sounds like the driver behind you did not keep enough distance behind tour your car. Sudden stops should be anticipated by all drivers, and this reflected in at least the California CVC laws.

The Fire Department vs. Traffic Safety Advocates Street safety advocates are butting heads with fire officials. Swift fire response does not have to come at the cost of lives on the roadway.

New post: a week of hectic back and forth with fire officials and city council over Berkeley street festivals brings out into the open a conflict in city halls across USA. Fire depts opposition to traffic calming and safety measures. Is there a solution?

Was once trying to cross the street at College in Elmwood, when an AC transit driver ran the red heading straight at me as I was stepping off the curb. Had to jump back to avoid the corner of the bus. Theyโ€™re overworked and trying to stay on schedule, but certain drivers need to be weeded out.

If you think about it, itโ€™s sort of insane how *few* crashes there are that involve buses/trolleys. Considering they are essentially running on a constant basis every single day.

In fact most of coastal San Diego is filled with ugly 40 year old stucco bungalows, surrounded by the worst land use imaginable.

A yard sign that says โ€œStop the 23 story turquoise st. TOWERโ€

The utter irony of seeing this sign in the yard of a single family home a half block from the beach in Pacific Beach, San Diego. The building in question would be located 1.5 miles away. And no, aesthetics has nothing to do with this stupid NIMBY mindset.

A fare optimized algorithm doesnโ€™t care about rider tolerances. And congestion preempts more efficient modes of transportation. Itโ€™s pretty easy to see how this can be gamed by AV companies.

Uber/Lyft, like taxis, are limited by human driver tolerance for long waits and lines. That doesnโ€™t exist for robots driven by algorithms.

I think theyโ€™re saying the opposite. That knowing drivers donโ€™t stop, pedestrians will (hypothetically) yield to drivers until safe (I.e. onus is on the pedestrian). This was more/less the explanation Iโ€™ve seen Berkeley traffic engineers.

An example of a โ€œmountable traffic circleโ€ in Berkeley California

An example of a โ€œmountable traffic circleโ€ in Berkeley California

And the transportation dept, at the behest of the fire dept, has recently standard mandating โ€œmountableโ€ traffic circles with curb heights so low as to be functionally equivalent to paint. And neighbors are unwilling to allow them to remove stop signs. The worst of both worlds.

A text snippet from the 1.5 Degree Lifestyles article:
"Low-carbon lifestyles. Options with large emission reduction potentials include car-free travel and commuting, ride-sharing, living closer to workplaces and in smaller living spaces; renewable grid electricity and off-grid energy, heat pumps for temperature control; and vegetarian-vegan diets, and substituting dairy products and red meat with plant-based options. If these options are fully adopted, each of them could reduce per-capita footprint by several hundred kg to over a tonne annually."

"Citizensโ€™ lifestyles are โ€œlocked-inโ€ by the existing infrastructure and product availability, and the shift in lifestyles is not the sole responsibility of consumers and their individual choices. All stakeholders, including national and local governments and businesses, need to urgently act to develop and provide viable and attractive solutions, including low-carbon products and services and the design of infrastructure-supporting low-carbon solutions, in parallel with facilitating behaviour changes among citizens."

Wanna stick it to Trump and live up to the Paris Accords, California? Stop driving so much *and* tell your city council's to build bus and bike lanes instead of throwing away money on car infrastructure.
