I think your description of the bikes everyday bikers ride, "comfort-style bikes", explains why people choose the bikes they do here in NL. They are comfortable!

I'm very aware of chaotic public space in most other parts of the world, often car-related. There is absolutely no reason all people cannot have nice streets. We just need to figure out how to move away from cars.

This is true. The frames of the old (pre-2000) steel bikes I work on are in much better shape than newer bikes. I don't know anything about steel production, but many new bikes are piles of rust after just a few years.

In my limited experience, my friends' cars in NL are always in excellent condition compared to US cars. And cars have so many parts that can't be fixed at home.

On the other hand, Dutch do a lot of home repairs on their bikes, plus have a high tolerance for poorly maintained bikes.

Every day is a nice day to ride a bike 🙂

Rotterdam public space:
Grassy tracks.
Door zone bike lanes.
Trees.
Sidewalk cafes.
Public art.
Narrow driving lanes.
Strictly enforced paid car parking.

Government, companies, institutions, media still haven't really migrated from the evil X.

Plus, I don't see much Bluesky used outside of North America.
