At my firm, our printers (with ribbons) had a "draft" setting, where the keys wouldn't hit so strongly & not so much ink would be used; either the reverse would be used for more drafts or to make little memo pads. Plus metal extenders for pencils as they got shorter by sharpening. Still have one
