My genuine gamedev opinion is that you definitely won't make your dream game first, but that you should try to anyways. You will end up finding the smaller project you finish first in the process of trying to make the game you're not ready for - and you'll actually care about it a lot!

an unintended side effect of telling newer indie devs "start small! don't try to make your dream game first!" is that a lot of people mistakenly interpret that as "you have to make an arbitrary amount of filler before you're allowed to make what you care about"
