Can sodium-ion batteries really take off in America?
14.11.2025 21:42 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0New from me @insideevs.com: Fordβs new LFP battery plant is key to affordable EVs. But itβs a tough time for battery plants, and this oneβs ties China make things extra-complicated: insideevs.com/news/763490/...

- Toyota's electric comeback (goodbye bZ4X, hello bZ)
- GM's cheap LMR batteries
- The GOP's plan to kill the EV tax credit

Yup. Surprised it took so long, to be honest

09.04.2025 17:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Everything's totally fine in the car business and nobody's panicking at all on this week's episode of the Plugged-In Podcast with me and @patrickgeorge.bsky.social
We discuss: Tariffs and the EV future, Q1's winners/losers in the EV market & how nobody can find Toyota hybrids

Even if you're already exhausted by coverage of Trump's incoming auto tariffs, give my boss @patrickgeorge.bsky.social's story here a read.
Hyundai's enormous new Metaplant shows that the tariffs are inescapable, even for companies with amazing timing and gleaming new U.S. plants.
The Fisker Ocean saga continues. Really cool story on @insideevs.com about the Bronx repair shop servicing NYC's newest, and weirdest, Uber car.

28.02.2025 07:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0EV maker Polestar evidently wants to scoop up buyers who are over Tesla. Taken together, this deal should drastically drop the monthly cost of a Polestar 3 lease.

Great interview by Mack at @insideevs.com on the Sony-Honda Afeela 1: "After sitting down for a half-hour virtual interview with Sony-Honda Mobility's president, I have more concerns than ever about this project."

We're convinced Hyundai took a certain Subaru playbook to bring to the EV world with the all-new Ioniq 5 XRT.
And after sliding one around some dirt roads, we're also convinced the idea is going to appeal to a lot of people.

If you're catching up on podcasts over the holiday weekend, the Plugged-In Podcast is a good one. (Though I am biased.) Me and @tlevin.bsky.social chat:
--Ford's tough road ahead
--Trump pulling the plug on charger funding
--EVs with gas engines? Yes, really.
Tune in!

This bit from my interview with Lucid Motors' CEO surprised me: He told me he'd love it if the vast majority of Lucid's business someday wasn't selling carsβbut rather tech licensing. He wants Lucid to be like the "Intel Inside" for EVs.
It makes sense, since cars are a notoriously crappy business
Trump just stepped up his attack on federal EV charger funding through the NEVI program.
The Federal Highway Administration notified states that their plans to deploy EV infrastructure were no longer approved, and that they can't obligate funds pending new guidance.

It's time for the @insideevs.com Tariff And Tax Credit Power Hour!
(We actually talked about a bunch of other stuff too, like the Lucid Gravity's bonkers 400 kW charging, and GM turning a profit on EVs.)
Enjoy!
The president has no authority to claw back funding for EV chargers, even if he wants to "Terminate The Green New Deal."
Still, I've got to imagine the funding pause/review Trump ordered could disrupt states and charging companies as they plan out new stations. Any tips here--my DMs are open.
βRivian, Tesla, the Chineseβwe have a full-throttle focus on EV. And if youβre doing that as your 10% job as an [automaker], youβre going to be in rough shape in 10 years.β
Rivian's CEO RJ Scaringe sounds off on tax incentives, the Trump era and more in an interview:

If you haven't heard me and @tlevin.bsky.social on the Plugged-In Podcast, you're missing out! This episode is our best yet.
We're finally no longer recording in rented cars or our relatives' houses, and we talk Model Y, Toyota EVs, a Rivian road trip and more:
