12.11.2025 00:55 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yesterday morning over breakfast, my 2.5 year old told me that she wanted to go to her grandparents house; "they have better books," she said.
Truly the most brutal takedown I've experienced in a long, long time (maybe ever).
that feeling of being ten and sinking your teeth into a Grownup Book full of words you imperfectly understand, staying up too late reading under the covers with your flashlight, is one of the defining joys of nerd childhood. let reading be a little dangerous!
20.09.2025 03:54 โ ๐ 375 ๐ 37 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Just because your play isn't selected for a particular opportunity doesn't mean that there isn't now somebody advocating for it/for you to get an opportunity that isn't even on your radar. No matter the outcome of a selection process, someone has read your work; that's never a bad thing. #newplays
12.09.2025 13:21 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0New play submissions are due to the O'Neill on September 18th and to Great Plains Theatre Commons on October 15. So it's time for my annual reminder: many of the folks reading and adjudicating for these kinds of festivals also work at/for other theaters around the country...
12.09.2025 13:21 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Endlessly glad to have moved out of the south and back to New England.

06.08.2025 22:58 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah, I feel like this is the year that weโre seeing people in leadership positions be like โooh, living up to our values is actually hard work, what if we justโฆdidnโt?โ

07.07.2025 16:00 โ ๐ 42 ๐ 8 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The parade was cancelled due to weather right before it was set to begin. Bernie was already lined up, so he marched anyway. I love Vermont.
03.07.2025 23:59 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0All of these women artistic directors are stepping down and many of them are being replaced by men and seasons are starting to reflect it.
26.06.2025 17:38 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0LOL. Theyโve updated their season announcement page to include playwright and director names now. Too bad updating gender disparity is not as easy.
25.06.2025 20:24 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Playwrights Horizons, arguably one of the leading #newplay theaters in the country, just announced a 25/26 season that's nearly devoid of women writers and directors.
I almost missed that fact because I initially closed the page in disgust upon seeing that they failed to credit their playwrights.
Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.
11.06.2025 16:22 โ ๐ 49004 ๐ 14838 ๐ฌ 582 ๐ 379I always want to know what your theater's next season is. I never want to watch a video to find out.
10.06.2025 16:29 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Agreed; 100%. Didn't think you were criticizing; I was just "yes, and"-ing.
09.06.2025 14:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0This obsession with continued growth is also one reason many theaters are struggling right now, especially those who own their own spaces. The financial precarity of rising costs/diminished audiences makes it difficult to think creatively about new ways of working and how to do less better.
09.06.2025 13:53 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Back when my guy owned a successful local bakery, he was explicitly told: "Scale or Fail" by a prospective partner. He said "nah" and sold the business. And we're all happier as a result.
09.06.2025 13:53 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0So many theaters do this! Sends me into a blind rage every time.

03.05.2025 19:04 โ ๐ 136 ๐ 135 ๐ฌ 6 ๐ 6The NEA bloodbath will impact us all, whether we get funds or not, whether we are artists or audience members or simply citizens. I used to look at the low level of federal funding as an American curse. But it also means that, for better or worse, we know how to find a way. We will not be silenced.
