a heartwarming story of how being an unethical and talentless hack is no barrier to success when you are willing to endlessly flatter the wretched views of rich dipshits

'It's a colonial invasion narrative': How Henry V inspired English Kings Killing Foreigners In 2019, Philip Arditti and Nina Bowers took aim at both the nationalism of Shakespeare's play and the rise of 'woke'. But have those targets shifted?

'In a way, this play has made me feel more English’

Hailey Bachrach (@bachrach.bsky.social) chats with Philip Arditti and Nina Bowers about revisiting their dark satire English King Killing Foreigners in a new political era

A bear in the wild, smiling and posing coyly

I guess this has probably already gone viral somewhere but I am simply dying at this picture of a bear that looks like it hired a photographer to do a glamour shoot

What Authors Need to Know About the $1.5 Billion Anthropic SettlementΒ  - The Authors Guild Today, Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle claims that it downloaded pirated books to train its AI systemsβ€”the largest U.S. copyright settlement in history. The parties in Bartz v Anthropic...

I’m seeing a lot of inaccurate info about the Anthropic settlement being passed around as fact, so here’s a good basic explainer from the Author’s Guild that I highly recommend reading so you understand it better if you’re potentially part of the class: authorsguild.org/news/what-au...

Updated my quick player grading tool from the old job for some client work and I've made some really interesting discoveries. It turns out your favorite team's star is pretty bad, but your rival's star is the best player in the league.

Because editing yourself TEACHES YOU HOW TO EDIT. And also write! When you have to take out all the "justs" and "reallys" yourself, you're aware of not putting them in there the next time you write. This is the whole process. This is the whole point of the practice of writing.

Plus the "didn't learn your lesson" framing is extremely fucked and implies you deserve to be taught that lesson again

I've been pretty vocal about my concern that toxic manosphere shit and regressive right-wing politics have left America at a massive disadvantage in the arms race of Guys Being Dudes. This is what I'm talking about.

imo 'sports misery' occurs as a circle not a spectrum--when your team is complete dogshit you achieve an unstressed freedom only otherwise found in fans of multi-year championship dynasties. true misery is eternal mid-ness, year-in year-out ~.500, one or two beloved stars wasting their careers

to say that I'm not giving up on the idea and meaning and value of criticism in ANY field, movies, books, music, theater, dance, whatever. As a reader/person/human, it has sustained me for a lifetime! We have to keep fighting for it. [End of threadβ€”and again, apologies!]

In light of Vanity Fair's recent idiotic decision, WaPo's offering its veteran critic a buyout, the NYT's "reassigning" three arts writers critics, etc., a lot of us are talking about the public's (and thus publications') lack of interest in criticism. It's part of a larger pattern of a war...

Ah, missed the parenthetical! I’d look at some of the practice-based publishers like Routledge, Palgrave, and Metheun in that case, as they have lots of case study collections of modern rehearsal. Elizabeth Tavares is also great on that stuff
