Letter to the Guardian.
The protection of badgers has a long pedigree (Report, 29 August). Arthur Gore, known as "Boofy", the eighth Earl of Arran, was a fanatical defender of them. He was also a tireless campaigner for the rights of homosexuals. In 1967 he managed to push through a law in the Lords that decriminalised homosexuality but failed to pass a bill to outlaw the cruel hunting of badgers. When asked why he had not received enough support for his badger bill, he replied: "Not many badgers in the House of Lords." Tony Lywood Keswick, Cumbria

Found when sorting an old drive. I still, very occasionally, say 'not many badgers in the House of Lords' and this is why:

This chart is about tactical voting, but looking at it from the perspective of โ€˜would it be easier for labour to get voters back from Reform, or from literally anyone elseโ€™ is quite revealing

Saved by Stoppard

Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec 1), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: โ€œIf there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?โ€ With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of โ€œadjuvant systemic chemotherapyโ€, and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patientsโ€™ survival.

Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia.

POV: The boom in post 60's Victorian & Edwardian period dramas was only possible due to the availability of heritage steam railways as locations. Meaning Ian & Colin who sorted out the points on the BlueBell line are more important for the UK film industry than RADA,The Bfi & Dicky Attenborough

Northern Ireland man from Lisburn kidnapped by Trumpโ€™s Ice raids because he โ€œlooked like a Mexicanโ€. He had the correct visa, all his documents. Heโ€™s never been in trouble with police.

Held in terrible conditions. A fellow captive couldnโ€™t get his medication and dropped dead of a heart attack

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor falls, the major lifts
The baffled king composing Whereโ€™s me jumper
Where's me jumper
Where's me jumper
Where's me jumper

I will say it if no-one will: it's amazing to me that if you're a woman and would like to buy summer swimwear, your only two options are seemingly "god no I don't swim, if I breathe my entire tit will fall out" or "ach ja, ich had a wonderful time swimming for East Germany at the 1988 Olympics "
