Poor future schoolkids.
Poor future students.
Poor future historians.

Imagine being a future person having to learn about and try and understand our present.

Make things a little easier for them, start keeping a diary.
A proper one, on paper.
Start soon.

Lessons for the End of the World On Octavia Butler, the L.A. fires, and the uses and misuses of the things that cannot be recovered.

Big brained meditations on Octavia Butler, the LA fires, AI, grief, memory, all inspired by a photo of him and the late, great Nikki Giovanni, from Hanif Abdurraqib:

The risks of universal vouchers are quickly coming to light. An initiative that was promoted for years as a civil-rights causeβ€”helping poor kids in troubled schoolsβ€”is threatening to become a nationwide money grab. Many private schools are raising tuition rates to take advantage of the new funding, and new schools are being founded to capitalize on it. With private schools urging all their students’ families to apply, the money is flowing mostly to parents who are already able to afford tuition and to kids who are already enrolled in private schools. When vouchers do draw

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but when people say that AI is their "thought partner" I wonder how to have a thought partner that cannot think (or feel, or communicate with intention). What appears to be thought is an illusion that only achieves meaning through the human interpreting it.

I love how certain chatgpt sounds when it just brazenly suggests a book as a notable source... but this book is nowhere to be found... not a trace of it...
And people share this sort of thing with me in discussions to prove me wrong...

I've got a book out!

So far I only seem to be able to embrace biographical or auto-biographical audio books. My son loves fiction on long car trips and I really have to push myself to follow.

1. Realizing that everything I read did not have to have a deeper purpose related to being a social studies teacher
2. Libby. I often now have 4-5 books going based on mood & focus level as well as an audio book & can pick up whichever/wherever
3. App time limits = intentional consumption

A version of the kermit vs darth kermit meme where good kermit tells the online academic that they should grade, while darth kermit tells them they should eat more pie.

Shakir had joined the ranks of a large if hidden population: NFL players who journal. In locker rooms across the league, more than a dozen players recently shared their conviction in the benefits of journaling, a habit they use to confront the stress inherent to a profession that invites scrutiny while suppressing sensitivity.
It’s impossible to place a precise number on NFL players who journal, but β€œit’s definitely more than it seems,” Bills backup quarterback Shane Buechele said. Many players who said they do not keep a journal knew teammates who did, and some expressed either prior or current interest in starting one.

Students who haven’t mastered foundational writing skills shouldn’t be using AI.

I guess those β€œteachers” haven’t watched a student AI their day away…
There *are* great ways to use it (study/review partner πŸ‘πŸ») but basic critical thinking skills must exist.
AI is being used by students to avoid thinking & they definitely aren’t reading it before turning in just what AI told them.

Fun trivia.

The people who wrote our Constitution weren't sure whether they were going to include a procedure for impeaching the President. Benjamin Franklin made the final argument to convince them.

Want to know how he changed their minds?

And I am just as devastated about Jamboard’s death as I was when they eliminated Reader 10+ years ago.

The other alternatives I’ve tried thus far are not nearly as quick to get students into and working.
