The Luxon Government is on a reckless rampage that risks turning Aotearoa into an industrial wasteland to be used & abused by foreign mining giants. As evidenced yesterday by proposed amendments to an already brutal attack on nature AKA the Fast Track Act www.greenpeace.org/aotearoa/pre...

Our submission elaborates on the differences between conventional selective breeding techniques & gene editing - as does Prof Heinemanns. Gene editing (incl SDN-1) can cause unintended mutations in species, and put DNA from one species into another, by accident - as in the hornless cattle incident.

It is worth reading Prof Jack Heinemann and his teams subs on this. They argue SDN-1 is a powerful GE tool capable of creating GMOs. The exemption of it, as proposed in the bill, would remove all oversight, tracking and accountability of GMOs created by it. www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Antibiotic resistance in โ€˜gene-editedโ€™ cattle FDA finds unintended antibiotic resistance genes in โ€˜gene-editedโ€™ dehorned cattle.

Sorry but that's not right - our subs argues the opposite of that. SDN-1 is a powerful GE tool that can introduce foreign transgenes into the genome of a species in the same way older GE techniques create transgenic GMOs, and it has already done so. For example: theecologist.org/2019/aug/21/...

Hey Manu. The Bill proposes to exempt gene editing techniques including SDN-1, from regulation altogether. If exempt SDN-1 can be be used to create GMOs outside the lab with no oversight. The Select Committee recommended an amendment to that but we're yet to see if the Govt will accept it.

The Polluters Get Paid Plan: AKA Regulatory Takings - Greenpeace Aotearoa How the Government is pushing an extreme idea that would block environmental protection and reshape our democracy.

What if polluters could demand a payout โ€“ just for being told to stop polluting?

Thatโ€™s exactly what the Govt is considering putting into the new RMA replacement laws. A fringe idea called โ€œregulatory takingsโ€ which is really just a polluters get paid plan.

Luxon Govt subsidy to fossil fuel companies is 12 TIMES HIGHER per person than Trump's subsidy. Trump subsidy is US$625m to coal - NZ$1070m. Luxon subsidy is (at least) NZ$200m to oil and gas exploration. 5.2m people in NZ and 347m in US. Trump subsidy NZ$3 per person; Luxon NZ$38 per person.

Let's call Luxon's little gas letter what it was. A textbook political stunt that leaders use when they donโ€™t have a credible plan: the โ€œblame the last lotโ€ routine. This Govt is trying to distract from its own track record which has made the energy crisis worse.

One company illegally sprayed the organophosphate pesticide, methamidophos, leaving residues at 30x the legal limit on food.
That pesticide is so toxic itโ€™s now banned.
But sure, letโ€™s keep cracking down on poor people stealing food they need to survive while agribusiness crooks walk free.

3/ This is not policymaking in the public interest โ€“ itโ€™s corporate pillage. It's Luxon's govt yet again working to make multinational mining giants and their offshore shareholders rich by letting them loot Aotearoa, poison our water, destroy native habitats and extract more climate killing coal.

1/ The latest from Luxonโ€™s War on Nature is a proposal to make it easier for mining corporations to bulldoze NZ's most fragile and precious ecosystems. And the mining industry didnโ€™t just get a seat at the table - they basically got given the pen to re-write the mining rulebook.

For the first time in NZโ€™s history, we could see corporations demanding taxpayer handouts from Govt for any environmental, health and safety, or cost of living protections that affect the use of their propertyโ€ฆ IF David Seymour's Regulatory Standards Bill passes.
