“This piece was loosely inspired by my experiences traveling internationally as a non-binary trans person and how dehumanizing some border crossings can be… This story asks the reader what they would be willing to give up in order to get to where they want to go.”

An introduction to the story:

“This story is about the trauma of change and the feeling that you might never be able to go home again—or if you do, that the person who makes it home isn't necessarily the same person who left in the first place.”

“It started with a moment: a ship hovering in front of a giant's eye. Everything expanded from there. The stories of Heavy Metal Magazine from my childhood were a big influence for this piece.”

“We've lost the magic of stars… Sometime during the 1980s, space became a cold, sterile place, an endless expanse of vacuum and loneliness with... parasites with teeth. Let's bring a bit of dirt and spell-casting back to the pages of science fiction, shall we?”
