The Tyler Perry Video
If someone makes 4-hour YouTube video about me, I'm leaving the country. I'm not even watching the video first. I will watch it on the private jet that is taking me to a tropical resort in a country that has no extradition policy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF8z...

Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter HΓΈeg
Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter HΓΈeg
Smilla's Sense of Snow is a great character novel, because Smilla is a great character. It also has an wonderful sense of place, occurring mostly in Copenhagen, Greenland, and at sea. The pacing is wonky but it holds its tension all the way to the end.

I Want to Burn This Place Down by Maris Kreizman
This is the debut essay collection from book critic Maris Kreizman. She explores the rude political awakening so many of us have experienced in the Trump era along with her personal health issues. Good stuff.

I saw Joan of Arc at a tiny bar in New Orleans in 1999. Every time the music would get quiet some shit head would yell "Cap'n Jazz!" So they're starting a song with this gently picked guitar and cymbal washes and the guy does it again. Tim says Yell Cap'n Jazz again and we're playing this 1/2

A Confederate soldier returns home to Arizona to find Union men living in his house. This is a solid western, but something about it really caught my attention and I didn't want to put it down.

I had a dream last night that Sammy Hagar was doing a show where he invited a bunch of guests to perform with him. I got an invite but he wanted to play chess with me onstage instead. I said, "Oh great, now I have to go lose a game of chess to Sammy Hagar..."

These novellas are SF cozy mysteries set on a generation starship. The hooks for both books are very clever spins on sf-nal tropes. This series has a lot of potential.

The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
I'm guessing what made this book so influential to readers in the 30's is the characters. Each one could be the protagonist of this story. It's a very impressive bit of writing. The plot however is borderline incomprehensible. I liked it.

Showa 1926-1939: A History of Japan by Shigeru Mizuki
This manga blends history with autobiography. The artwork alternates between beautifully detailed panels and minimalist cartoony figures. Is this a common technique in this kind of manga? I don't know. But it is an engaging style.

Half His Age by Jeanette McCurdy
This novel is Jeanette McCurdy's follow-up to her memoir. It reads like a first novel, but there's a lot of promise here. I'm interested to see where she goes from here.
Note on the audiobook version: McCurdy reads this book *fast*.
