3rd party candidates are pointless until we reform our elections so they have a chance of actually winning. Until then, if you vote 3rd party between a weak dem and a fascist, you care more about your idealism than protecting the people you care about. Primaries are how we demand the dems we expect.

I'm saying we pull all the levers of power we possibly can, we fight back like hell with proactive, strategic nonviolence. We form networks of support so we're prepared for general strikes, we take care of each other when someone needs a meal or a ride or child care or money for the doctor.

The most heinous thing this tyrannical regime is doing is targeting marginalized communities. I'm in this fight for all of us, because my white cis hetero middle aged lady ID gives me an advantage that isn't fair. I see all the ugly fascist BS. I think you and I are arguing about nonviolence.

I know that very well. This is not new to me.

Also, realize that when you discourage people from getting involved by telling them they will fail, how are you helping? Do you want to be right, or do you want to win? I want to win, and I'll keep encouraging people to get involved in sustained opposition. Your words influence people. Choose wisely

I hear you. I'm curious - how does your perspective change your opposition plans? Do you arm yourself? Organize an armed opposition? You may be right, but I'm not interested in foreseeing the future. I'm interested in doing effective sustained nonviolent work. It might fail. But it might succeed.

That's incorrect. I suggest you look into the research of Erica Chenoweth. In a study of the past 100 years of global INTERNAL conflict, she expected to find that violence was more successful than nonviolence in removing tyrants. She was surprised when her research proved the opposite was true.

3/3 Traitors to the cause of freedom and democracy. Those are the Chamberlains of our time, but internally. That would be a fair comparison. Do you believe that the extensive research done by Erica Chenoweth, which shows that nonviolent resistance has been more successful than violence, is invalid?

2/3 War between countries as in WWII is entirely different from internal opposition to the Trump regime. You're comparing apples to oranges. Chamberlain's appeasement failed. Appeasement always fails. The institutions in the US that have turned to appeasement are traitors.

1/3 One country threatening another is very different from tyranny over one's own people. What a foreign country decides to do is ultimately out of our hands, whereas we can influence politics and power within our own country.

Nonviolence isn't just preferable. It's a strategic tactic that is more successful than violence. We're building the muscles we need to sustain this nonviolent movement in Indivisible. Folks should join! I'm active in my local group's leadership, and we must keep growing this movement; and WE WILL.

I disagree. In fact, violence is exactly what backfires with the American public (L.A.). On the other hand, look at the rise in opposition to the violent tactics of ICE and Border Patrol following the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. These are our "Selma" moments: the murder of innocents.

Minnesota is proof that those assumptions are incorrect. When people organize in supportive, proactively nonviolent ways, they can challenge political power, even a police state. It comes with a cost - a dreadful cost, as we've seen in Minneapolis - but that collective action is true power.

And so it becomes challenging to motivate people to take action. I feel this intensely as a community and political organizer. Just convincing people their collective actions matter is a big hurdle. And there are other factors making people feel politically powerless: unequal access, big money, etc.

Very true. A guest on PBS News Hour discussed the psychological result of living in an info-saturated media world: learned helplessness. Constant intake of info lulls people into the role of passive observer; the news becomes something that happens TO us. We forget our power to create change.
