Important (if depressing) to remember that the kind of authoritarian race-baiting expressed by Jenrick on Today (eg presenting all refugees as sexual predators and promising to deport all of them) was taboo in British politics for decades. Yet I doubt any Tory will publicly criticise him

(Also, you can be surrounded by people, or partnered, or riding all around you, and still feel lonely. Chin-stroking about society is fine but would help if loneliness was talked about as a normal part of being human, and how to cope with it where possible, rather than just "Improve Yourself".)

Something that's kinda missing from the Loneliness Discourse is that even if you "work on yourself", are a decent human, and treat people well, you mightn't find your person because so much of it is down to luck. Loneliness is part of life, learning how to manage it is as important as "solving" it.
