I’m no great fan of the ACA.

I believe we should guarantee health care as a human right through a single-payer Medicare for All system.

But β€” at minimum β€” we cannot allow Republicans to destroy our already-broken system by doubling insurance premiums for 20 million Americans.

Schumer and the Dems are about to teach Trump the lesson that they’ll cave whenever he abuses power to sufficiently hurt people.

Unacceptable. There are 189,000 people in my district who will be paying 50–300% more for the same, and in many cases worse, healthcare.

I won’t do that to the people I represent. I’m a NO on this β€œdeal.”

Okay, Ezra is confirming that he's hearing D senators are actually plotting to cave to Trump and end the shutdown WITHOUT any extension of the ACA, just a promise of a vote later down the line.

Call your senators, friends, NOW, and tell them NO DEAL without ACA funding!

Looking forward to learning all about how the right should move left to win elections tomorrow. They should maybe dye their hair pink, learn to love pronouns.

Probably a good day to reup this, from September.

Resistance has a history.

And it mattered profoundly.

Successful or not, it showed backbone and a will to resistβ€”and inspired others to do the same.

It fueled resistance in the North.

The worst thing about following so many of these (excellent) political reporters is their perodic forays into sportsball posting.
(Other bad things include depression and dismay about authoritarianism etc.β€”not their fault.)

Conservative media criticism? We’ve got to do better, there must be some reason they don’t trust us

Liberal media criticism? Time to go on twitter and mock the libs so conservatives know I’m one of the cool ones

Until @wesleymorris.bsky.social explicated it on his podcast Cannonball, I'd always thought Lady Gaga here in "Applause" sang "kunst"β€”a cleverer cringe than "Koons."

Today, Trump's trying to make us comfortable with masked agents on the streets.

Tomorrow, Trump's looking to leverage this power, take advantage of our elections, and scare voters away.

We must call this what it is: a power grab that echoes the rise of authoritarian regimes.

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.

After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century β€œwoke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of BartlomΓ© de las Casas.

You don't have to judge Columbus by the standards of today. His tenure as governor of Hispaniola was so horrific that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to answer for his many crimes.

Plus he never set foot on any land that would ever be a part of the United States of America.

Also from the Department of Geographic Irritations is the confusion of the cardinal directions (north, south, etc.) and intercardinal directions (like northwest, southeast, etc.) in otherwise reliably factual writing or reporting like a good newspaper or a nonfiction book. Maps! Use them!
