In his latest @thebulletin.org, @dustinmulvaney.bsky.social connects the Trump administration's approach to public lands (energy dominance! drill, baby, drill! abundant mining, logging, and development!) back to the Wise Use Agenda and the earlier Sagebrush Rebellion

@dustinmulvaney.bsky.social also teases out the connection to the liberal-leaning "abundance" movement championed by Ezra Klein & Derek Thompson (& Interior Secretary Burgum, who said at his confirmation hearing โthis is the time of abundance, we can do all of itโ) which also echoes Wise Use ideas

What was the Wise Use agenda & what does it have to do with Trump?
So glad you asked! Wise Use was a reactionary Reagan era movement that purported to find the middle ground between "extreme environmentalism" and "extreme industrialism," as demonstrated in these feel-good Wise Use mottos

Now, as @dustinmulvaney.bsky.social writes in @thebulletin.org, many of the items on the Wise Use agenda are on the Trump administration's to-do list, sometimes in the exact places that Wise Use architects proposed (e.g. logging in Tongass National Forest)

Maps show how the Bay Area has been unusually cold this summer
As heat waves roast much of the West Coast, the Bay Area has been spared from extreme temperatures over the course of the last two months. Itโs a unique trend.
San Francisco International Airport has measured its coldest first half of summer since 1965. The average maximum temperature at the airport was just 67.6ยฐF through July 15.
Thirty-eight of the first 45 days this summer in San Jose have been cooler compared to the same time period in 2024.

This would be hugely disruptive. In my Bulletin piece, I list ~ 9 GW of solar on federal lands on track to be approved this summer. Another GW on fed land going through the California energy commission process, another 3 GW on private land in CA - all hoping to start asap for full tax credit+bonus.

Creation of a National Mining System by Congressional authorization, to embody all provi- sions of the General Mining Act of 1872 with the added provision that all public lands including wilderness and national parks shall be open to mineral and energy production under wise use technologies in the interest of domestic economies and in the interest of national security.
