A lot of contractors do have engineers they work with. Final bit of advice be careful with the contractors that promote "basement solutions" not that the products or what they want to do are necessarily bad, but they may push something that isn't needed or ineffective with what you want to do.

...If you are looking at lowering your basement slab, I would start with a structural engineer. Lower the basement slab changes things with the walls that need to be addressed by an eng. Without an engineer a contractor may provide a solution that doesn't actually work.

I am no longer with St Paul. Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for contractors but there are many out there that would do that sort of work...(cont.)
