Super Lesbian Animal RPG on Steam Melody has decided to become a healer in this classic-inspired turn-based RPG about love, anxiety, and fighting funny-looking monsters in dungeons.

I legitimately believe that next to the end of disc 1 of the original Final Fantasy VII, that scene in Super Lesbian Animal RPG is the greatest moment in video game history. It's a testament to how strong writing can elevate video games to their highest potential. 13/fin

There's a scene later in the ending that destroys me even further, but you have to play the game to understand why it does so; I just can't do justice to it here. As I said earlier, no moment in a video game has made me cry harder than this moment, no matter how often I play/watch it. 12/

THAT is the moment when the game finally lets you FEEL that things are okay, that you can exhale, and as the acoustic guitar and flute of "Homecoming" play, the sheer beauty of the song on top of all that relief is just overwhelming. It completely breaks me. 11/

Allison turns to Melody and says, "Come on, Mel. Let's go home." In that moment, those simple words feel like nothing short of a benediction, and then Melody's theme, "Homecoming," plays for the first time. 10/

Even after returning to Reverie and all the stuff that happens there, the writing keeps just enough tension that you can't really exhale until everyone else leaves, the rest of the party teleports away, and Melody and Allison are left by themselves at the summit of Mt. Sappho. 9/

Even after Melody and Allison wake up in Verena's house and you know they're okay, though, you still don't FEEL like things are okay, because you're in a literally different dimension, and everything from the artwork to the music emphasizes this otherness. 8/

Everything from the party's talk with Verena before the battle with her, through to when Melody and Allison pass out from mana poisoning after the last fight with God King Javis, brings so many threads from throughout the game to a deeply fulfilling, and completely earned, climax. 7/

Chrono Trigger's main ending had been the biggest cry any video game ever gave me, but then the ending of Super Lesbian Animal RPG beat it twice. The first is the start of the final "victory lap," and again, the music hits at just the right moment to completely undo me. 6/

(Non-spoiler note: I don't include the events at the end of disc 1 of the original Final Fantasy VII in here because those have always hurt too much for me to cry as much as I feel like I should, and if you're going to put one moment in video game history on a pedestal ....) 5/

Of course, it's not "Far-Off Promise," but "To Good Friends," and the moment that harp glissando and those sweeping strings hit, it's too much beauty for me to handle in the depth of all that sadness of everyone leaving forever, and it completely breaks me. 4/

That's why when Lucca says that the time gates are closing and everyone needs to go back to their proper time, and Marle says, "You mean ... this is goodbye?" That alone hits like a sledgehammer, and just hearing "Far-Off Promise alone would be bad enough at that moment. 3/

No game's writing is more economical than Chrono Trigger's, which leads to so many people feeling like the game is so much longer than it is, because SO MUCH happens during the game, especially when it comes to all the amazing friendships you see develop. 2/

How the main ending of Chrono Trigger destroyed me, and how the ending of Super Lesbian Animal RPG one-upped it. TWICE. Threaded to hide spoilers for both games. 1/
