Exactly this. Gone from journalism to a suspect show business/journalism hybrid where he's neither one thing or the other. Finds that he doesn't get the scoops he thinks he does because he isn't trusted by the real insiders so he talks bilge.

When Starmer says the leak is β€œa massive discourtesy to parliament," I wonder how accountable he feels when the Speaker chides his government for announcing policies before letting parliament in on the act. He's no better than Sunak, Johnson et al in that regard.

Most of my contemporaries didn't speak English regularly until they went to primary school (this is rural Pembrokeshire c1974). I had an English father so learnt both Welsh and English from year dot. The structures have always interchanged. A glorious mess I wouldn't be without.

It's as if there's a writer's room behind this. So many set ups and pay offs.

Pinter spoke. Stoppard sang and danced. I love the - and I paraphrase - the story about him applying for a job as a junior reporter in Bristol. The editor said 'it says here you're interested in politics. Who's the Chancellor of the Exchequer?' Stoppard replied, 'I'm interested, not obsessed.'

In Liverpool, a city rightly famed for its theatre and comedy, there isn't a better farce/pantomime to be found.

Probably the funniest show in Liverpool at the moment. But what I find truly farcical is having kicked out the Trots they go and have a conference calling for unity in the one city where Trots can easily mobilise and make a factional racket. Ray Cooney couldn't have organised it better.

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his β€œI’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say β€œwhat the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

True tale: A Baltimore police colonel called a rival at 3 a.m. from a crime scene: "Leon, I got you now. You fucked up. You wrote "POLICE" backwards on the front of the EVU truck."
"Eddie, that's so it reads correctly in a rear view mirror."
Long pause.
"Aw Leon, you got an answer for everything."

"Trump is behaving exactly as he would if he were a Russian asset" can't be argued with. But because it's Hannan you still think, hang on, there must something wrong with this somewhere.

P32 in the hardback ed of Jennie Lee: A Life by Patricia Hollis. Just looked at it again. Bookies were actually interfering in by elections. I got it mixed up because Lee was elected in a by election that happened just a few months before the General Election.

In 1929 Labour came out against a gambling tax the Tories wanted to introduce, so in that year's General Election, bookies paid for cars to ferry prospective Labour MPs who were on the stump.

very very interesting short video series on the importance of friction in the modern world esp in the AI era.

young people are increasingly talking about 'agency' and working on strategies to make sure that their lives aren't just about clicking, swiping and consuming.

And as a percentage of the monies involved the jewellery means less than nothing. I bet collecting it will cost more than it's worth. As my old man used to say, nine tenths of fuck all is fuck all.
