I once had an outage and when I checked the power company's website it said the reason was "raccoon contact with equipment."

Watching DS9's "Past Tense" and realizing all the stuff in the "past" actually takes place in the past now (a very 90s idea of 2024).

This person is my age, too, so it's not a case of something fading out with the younger generation.

I just read that Dr. Oz is saying that Americans will collectively lose 135 billion pounds by this time next year. Someone pointed that would require every American to lose an average of about 400 pounds.

I guess that's the same math they used to calculate that drug prices will be lowered by 1400%.

I grew up with things like He-Man, Power Rangers, and superhero comics, where there was a lot of "we need to invent a polarity-inversion-zero-point-refractory device to save the city" but then also there was a lot of "this other thing's just magic," so I feel like genres have blended my whole life.

Since I thought it was just a quick follow-up, I decided not to complain, and then it ended up being 40+ minutes in a chair that was pushing my neck a weird way.

I had one of those moments at the dentist yesterday where they were trying to adjust the chair to fit me better and asking if whatever they did made it more comfortable, and then I have to decide if I should explain that I'm never comfortable (and also that every adjustment made it worse).

Damon King (star of "The Rings of Mars" and hopefully some sequels in the future) is not a fan of violence and doesn't use weapons. He tries to be nonlethal whenever possible when he is forced to fight. Despite not having the most optimistic view of humanity, he wants them to be better, not dead.

In Special Inspector EP09, Eponine starts out with a bit of a willingness to inflict harm when she feels it necessary (though she's perhaps not mature enough to really understand when it's necessary, and due to her upbringing, is a bit too willing to pay forward what she went through).

In the Crowns series, Val has a very complicated relationship with violence. She was a special operative (sort of a combination spy/assassin, as well as a high ranking member of the palace guard) who had a respect for life and did what had to be done, but did not relish or enjoy it.

One thing I didn't remember is that the DS9 episode "Defiant" (the one with Thomas Riker) aired the same weekend that Generations hit theaters. I guess it was meant to be cross-promotion. Nowadays it feels more like they'd try to avoid anything like that.

I'm watching Star trek Generations (paused to use the bathroom and check a couple things) and, man, it might not be a perfect movie, but it's very enjoyable. The craftsmanship alone that went into making it is evident. They don't make 'em like this anymore, and that's a damn shame.

I've also done this in screenplays. The actor would be free to ignore it, of course, but it gets the intention across and helps show the intended pacing.

I've always preferred the ellipsis, but I've also read/written a ton of comic books and there's no way to do a dialogue tag (you either have to have an entire panel clearly showing the person not speaking, or you can attach a little balloon with an ellipsis to the main balloon to show the pause).
