Nerdy guy in his 30's that's trying to learn how to do the "social" part of social media. Been running DnD games for years and love to talk shop about it. Love to hear about video games, movies, and music.
Count me jealous
19.05.2025 19:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0They got a little blurb in the book about using other stats to inform a skill that people miss sometimes.
Like, it is legit though to use strength in intimidation instead of charisma and stuff like that. That way you do avoid the whole "strong does not equal intimidating" thing.
Dude, same. Been on hiatus for months on a multi-year campaign that is just crazy fun.
I'm the DM though, and it's my writer's block thats stopping it. Gotta figure that out first.
Yeah, wish it didn't happen as often as it does. It felt like a briar patch when I started playing. Thorns everywhere.
It's easier to deal with them now, but it was a dramatic mess while it was happening.
Just makes it more worthwhile to keep those connections with the good players.
That's the biggest upside and downside of 5th edition. They boiled down almost every situational bonus into the advantage system and reduced resistance into a flat half.
It made a much easier time for people that struggle memorizing, but lost a lot of room for subtle/situational character options.
Hey, whatever it takes to get those ideas flowing. That factoid production side sometimes strikes gold when a tip develops into a quest hook, so don't stop!
11.03.2025 20:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Kobolds Plus fight club is a pretty great site to navigate the whole "challenge rating" mechanic of encounter building.
Playing around with it helps to give you some idea for the difficulty of each fight, and how much you should throw at a party between rests.
I hope it counts. Been playing and running DND for years and I hope that earns me some credit. Should earn you some too.
11.03.2025 19:53 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think that's one of the worst parts of a red-flag of a player, that you can see how good the situation could be.
Like, if everything we're just a little different, there could be so much enjoyment out of playing with them, but then the big reveal happens and it just turns it all tragic.
I've been lucky enough to have a group I've run a game for for years now, but I know how painful it can be to schedule these things.
Sometimes all one person can do to scratch that itch is to play some video game RPGs and draw their character having fun.
This why they say to not worry about acting/playing a character like their stats. Be whoever you wanna be, and your dice roll successes and failures will inform who they are.
I had a detective PC that was bad at insight, so I got the chance to be comically bad at detecting lies. It was great
That first fireball spell is going to be a hell of a moment.
Like a butterfly sneezing and a firework shooting out of them.
Luckily there's an alternate universe (see: different game) where they do exist.
I did that for my first character and now the second rendition is my favorite run with him. Highly recommend it as an option.
It's definitely a wonderful experience. Having a story come together perfectly but in a way you never expected is very much peak dnd. Especially as a DM that gets to have a big hand in its making.
25.02.2025 19:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Could join a random group on roll20 if you need a game. It's free to join, and if you find a good group you could jump with them to another ttrpg platform if needed.
That or become a DM and make those OCs NPCs in your game. That's what I did
Not sure. Could be the stubborn and prideful depictions. That and the constant short jokes to rile them up is a classic.
25.02.2025 19:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0What about if youve played as almost every race at least once but have played dwarves the most?
25.02.2025 19:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Same. I run a game, but none of my players want to run anything. I went online and joined a few random tables to feed the beast. Best part is that I can steal... I mean... Get inspiration for my own game while I do it.
19.02.2025 03:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If we're rolling and not using point buy, everyone rolls d6s one at a time until I get 6 sets of 4d6 (drop lowest). Everyone uses the same array of stats so that no one player has a huge disparity from another.
But I mostly just use an expanded point buy (from 5 to 18)
I'd agree, but I feel like getting my shit together is even tougher than that sometimes.
19.02.2025 02:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I have a soft spot for a magically broken earth locale.
Something holding plots of land in the air wide enough to either park a car or build a city all erupted out of the ground and almost frozen in time. Could be all wasteland or super-juiced natural growth, love em all.
We ended up with a very nature focused team. Ranger, druid, barbarian, and rogue.
Mandragora is a nightshade, so it's poisonous, and our rogue picked up poisoner as a feat a while before we got our own ship.
It just kinda fit for us. That and the barbarian liked that it almost sounded like dragon
Hey, upside, by the time you've made a ton of characters, you'll have plenty of inspiration to pull from in case you try on the DMing mantle someday.
10.02.2025 20:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Might be wise considering you just broke both your legs here...
10.02.2025 20:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Welcome to the club. When the DnD bug bites, it really holds ya. Bet you'll have 20+ character concepts saved up by the end of the year.
10.02.2025 20:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Based on the game I'm playing right now? The Mandragora
You gotta name it around the team vibe and/or the look of it though
Oh I could go on for hours on the story elements and dnd projects that took me years to learn how to recycle properly. After lots of practice, it very much resembles Lego pieces.
And those stories you make for yourself won't be going away. You'd just be writing a different book with friends too.
I'll always push for putting priority on being present and listening over memorizing the details of an adventure.
Details can be adjusted and paths can circle back around eventually. Pacing and investment is too important to lose to getting lost in notes.
I fell into that pitfall many times.
Yeah, it gets outclassed a lot. They only kinda recently hit the accelerator on trying to add new features.
It's still a free service for people to join and play on, so it has accessibility credit and an established base, but it's got a ways to go before it can catch up to the competition.
I'm a DM, so I imagine I'm experiencing a fragment of schizophrenia with all the characters/voices I use and have rattling around my head.
