It's funny cause for a neighborhood it you can sort of understand the lack of background characters since they only ever had kid characters, but the school is just a ghost zone more or less.

The school episodes of Ed Edd n Eddy are wild because the show didn't have any background characters by choice so this picture is around half of this school's student body

I didn’t know there was a new Ranma 1/2 anime and now I’m interested. I liked the old anime as a kid but I don’t think I would have rewatched it. It’s better vaguely remembered through nostalgia glasses

You can’t really change Akane’s baggage about not being feminine enough without fundamentally changing the story. You can’t really change Ranma making fun of her for being a tomboy. You CAN, however, change it so that it no longer feels as if even the nice friendly characters judge her for it

Ranma is a series making jokes about 80s gender roles in Japan and you can’t really get rid of that, but you CAN make it clear the new series is still set in the 80s and can change lines here and there to fit modern perceptions of feminine and masculine gender expression

One thing I think is really cool about the new Ranma 1/2 anime is that it manages to keep the humor and tone and biggest gags of the original manga in a way that feels true to the text while subtly changing things that haven’t aged well in ways you wouldn’t notice unless you were looking for it

I love that Ranma was posing in those Akane photos because it was a good wind up to the gag of the "secret" photos of him that Gosunkigi took where he was posing for them.

I wondered why I didnt mind Gosunkugi as much in the new episode as I did in the manga...

and everyone was like NO STOP GOD NO PLEASE

You can really feel when the anime started doing filler because mid-season it was just "the rest of the episodes will be happosai episodes".

Rewatching it now, a bunch of the worst episodes with him were anime-only, and I remember him straight up not doing all that much in the manga when I reread it.

That's fine, but what are they gonna do about Happosai? I enjoyed the original so much, but man, I could not stand that guy lol

it's also a neat touch because it preserves two different story beats from the manga, while simultaneously cutting down and streamlining. It makes the story go faster without feeling like it affected the pacing.

Changes like this rule because they aren’t simply sanding down rough edges but taking an opportunity to add a new gag and enhance our understanding of the characters. We can see that Ranma

1) doesn’t see Gosunkugi as a threat
2) is willing to mess around with him
3) is always around Akane

Need a fic now where Ranma thinks Gosunkugi has a crush on him because he's always taking his picture.

Girl has enough ego for that misunderstanding. 😆

Another good example from the season premiere: you can’t change Gosunkugi being Akane’s creepy stalker without fundamentally changing the character

You can, however, change it from “he takes sexy photos of Akane doing gymnastics” to “he tries to get photos of Akane but Ranma keeps posing for them”

Yeah I've been rewatching the old series and she really gets short shrift in anime only episodes especially

It drives me crazy when I go back and rewatch the original and she gets demoted so quickly. She has such a strong intro and then gets sidelined! I'm so glad they're giving her the attention she deserves

I think often of the time period Takahashi was writing this: just her second series in a Shonen book. She knew people would be focused on Ranma. But Akane is the perfect audience stand in: girl with normal hobbies, interrupted, turned into a damsel in a samurai harlequin. I always read it about her

The original show is actually a Frankenstein of three different productions, all of which suffered production issues. The manga is one continous story, so much more fluid.
