We need to start understanding these as related acts, and that the unhinged shouting both has serious consequences and is an indicator of the perpetrator’s likelihood to commit more violent acts, just the way we have come to understand the seriousness of things like upskirting.

The gendered abuse I get while riding a bike and the weaponised threats I’ve experienced from drivers all have a common denominator: they’re abuses of power, perpetrated by people who do it because they can and because there is no real consequence for either.
