I feel some responsibility, as we develop the software. But helical reconstruction is prone to getting stuck in local minima, and unfortunately still requires a lot of self-criticism. The most important one: if you don't see expected features in the map, don't trust it!

We found that by using ab initio reconstruction at very high res, in very small steps, we could crack some small structures that had eluded us - e.g. 39kDa iPKAc (EMPIAR-10252), below.

Thrilled to announce my first PhD publication in Nature Comms! We determined structures of the Tad pilus ATPase CpaF from Caulobacter. We use these structures to propose how CpaF employs a rotary mechanism of catalysis to drive Tad pilus assembly.

Recruiting scientists from the US has to be coupled with increases to tricouncil funding, else we will fail both the recruits, & of course Canadian scientists, who are struggling with insufficient funds. Discovery & biomedical research funding (NSERC, CIHR) in Canada is among the lowest in the G7.
