Truffle the Jack Russell Terrier reflecting on her work as I untangle a bone she wrapped thread around multiple times Normally the serger is covered so this doesn't happen, she got that off too

The dogs were jumping back & forth around the dinning room & into the window while I was writing an exam

Which is typical for them, but somehow Truffle got tangled up with the thread from my serger so it was an episode of Harold and the purple Crayon untangling it from all around the house

So looking at a $60 seed order for pumpkins to grow next year 🙃

3 popcorn cobs with a handful of seeds between them

Harvested the popcorn and despite shaking them every day, they made better decoration than they did a snack 😄

What I didn't talk about is what a passionate JRT breeder Lori was back in the day

I have Truffle & Cherry so I can continue on her lineage that she worked so hard on

They'll each have puppies, & Lori's legacy will live on into future generations

Especially my black headed gal, Misty Mon Cherry

Me holding Zee in August (2025), the last time Lori came over to see me, we talked for 3 hours, about life, about Angel's hotness, and Trump being a SOB POS.

Val & Zee (the dogs) are okay

Lori's story isn't about the way it ended, but how much she lived the last 18 months

I'm telling Lori's story, because she always wanted to tell it

We talked many times about her dictating it, and I'd type things out for her; but there just wasn't enough time. There never is.

She was an average woman, with an extraordinary spirit, and I will miss my friend deeply.

Our friendship taught me a lot.

About asking for help when you need to,

About letting go when you have to,

About loving people wholeheartedly with all their flaws,

And about fighting for people’s right to die the way they want to, when they have that choice.

Lori was absolutely depressed and scared about her financial future; she would tell you that plainly.

But as much as my friend and I tried to provide her hope and options, she didn’t want those

She wanted peace & to be free of pain

She didn’t get that, and it’s something MAID would have given her.

I want to be clear here.

In the 2 years I’ve known her, Lori never wavered from her choice or her goal

She regularly talked openly about her desires for an end to her pain

What Lori had really wanted was to go peacefully in her fields at home, where her animals could all come visit her after, so they understood she didn’t leave them, she was just gone.

She applied for MAID but was denied, I tried to direct her to groups like Dignity in Dying, but she wasn’t prepared to wait and go through all the litigation

Lori had previously been a nurse so we all knew what was coming

After multiple surgeries, the doctors weren’t able to “fix” Lori

Her only option was to have her leg amputated, and for her own reasons, she decided that was not acceptable

So she spent the last few years in a walking boot, her mobility steadily decreasing and her pain increasing

Lori truly was a ray of sunshine

And sometimes a pain in the butt bc she wanted to rant about the latest thing the orange felon did when I was just trying to get dinner on my table

Or going on about how hot Angel from Buffy is when I'm trying to study

I’m going to miss those life interruptions

A friend & I got to follow along the last 1.5 years as she visited National parks all across the States, scootered down Bourbon Street (her favourite thing!), seeing museums and enjoying culture. She got to meet new people and visit old friends

All with her beloved Jacks, Val & Zee, in tow

What happened next, was Lori got her freedom back

She kept 2 of her favourite dogs, she sold the farm once everyone was homed, and she took off in her truck and trailer and went to go explore

Once I got to know Lori, she quickly opened up about seeking MAID

TLDR; she didn’t get it.
