At Pahiatua there's links to Masterton, Palmerston North, and Woodville. Which is what makes me think the damage is very close to a reasonably important exchange building.

So basically any exchange building that's remotely important has multiple redunant fibres in multiple directions. Eg the exchange we're off in featherston has a multi circuit fibre through the rail tunnel from upper hutt. And another north to masterton.

I never worked on that bit of the network so unfortunately can't remember which building it might be, but "DWDM links" implies more than one core network path broken. Assuming RNZ are correct in saying that copper and fibre is damaged then that definitely says very close to the exchange to me
