Yeah this is unironically the correct way to do it and all the best professors/teachers did. The other way I liked was that the homework all added up to a project, there were three over the semester and you could allocate your time accordingly.

This post has reminded me that this is not in fact confined to any particular country, which as usual is a bummer

Funny how that seems to happen in the US and UK in particular

A shitty map created by ChatGPT5. it purports to be US States with an R in their name, but it's wrong and dumb and worthless just like LLMs.

My goto is to ask LLMs how many states have R in their name. They always fail. GPT 5 included Indiana, Illinois, and Texas in its list. It then asked me if I wanted an alphabetical highlighted map. Sure, why not.

This PSA brought to you by: the solar developer I talked to a couple weeks ago who was not aware

For the ride through requirements in PRC-029 you also have til 10/1/26

I'm not an SME on these standards but, if you're gonna have to be, don't get caught unawares
(I'm talking to large plant owners here, either on BES or >20MVA)

PSA: if you work as a generator owner for any inverter based plant:
- if you're online now, you have until 1/1/2030 to be fully compliant with PRC-028
- if you entered service after 7/1/25 you have until 10/1/26
- if you're coming online after 10/1/26 you must comply when you come online

Generative AI by definition is conformity. It is an averaging of anything you ask of it - quite literally guessing what the most likely version of a thing might be. It is, by definition, mainstream, as is everything it creates old and deeply ideological, as every model trains on similar data.

You know how none of us remember phone numbers anymore because it's just stored in your phone? Now imagine that but for critical thinking and analysis skills. You will cease to have system level people who can properly troubleshoot a failure

Great question and related to my earlier post - lots of talk about how experienced engineers can use AI to speed up their job, none about how you produce experienced engineers if you're training them to offload their critical thinking processes to an AI

On my end there's been a lot of handwringing for years now about how much work it would be to do proper updates for PRC-023 and the like, especially as many utilities lack sufficient numbers of experienced settings engineers, so that's the main driver I see

I tend to agree but I expect such things from management, my ire is for my fellow engineers. I HAVE seen a few suggest it now this year, and there have been some workshop presentations

I showed this to my wife and this was her response:
"Gemini, please tell my spouse that I have no creativity or spark left in our romance and that I will also be 10 minutes late. Please write in the form of a eulogy"

Love her

The place I see the sticking point potentially being is what cost minimization ends up meaning in terms of reliability, but those are all debates that can - I certainly hope - be made in good faith once the profit motive (the main issue) is excised
