I used to have time for defeatism on this subject and then after 2 weeks of lockdown the canals of venice were clear enough to see fish and the dolphins were back in the Ganga so yeah, the climate doomerism also now feels like an op

This doesn't even work as a joke, why would you want a satire mag to become just a news site?

If random men in masks claiming to be ICE agents try to grab me, and they’re *not* really ICE, I have the legal right to defend myself against them, yes? And if they are ICE, I don’t?

So how am I supposed to tell the difference? I’m supposed to give my masked kidnappers the benefit of the doubt??

So Kristi Noem goes on Fox and lies that Sen Padilla didn’t ID himself, even though the video is there for all to see. But get what she’s saying: Assaulting and handcuffing someone for trying to ask a question is OK in any case? This is a criminal regime.

Ardem Patapoutian's story is not just the American dream, it is the dream of American science.

He arrived in Los Angeles in 1986 at age 18 after fleeing war-torn Lebanon. He spent a year writing for an Armenian newspaper and delivering Domino's at night to become eligible for the University of California, where he earned his undergraduate degree and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience.

He started a lab at Scripps Research in San Diego with a grant from the National Institutes of Health, discovered the way humans sense touch, and in 2021 won the Nobel Prize.

But with the Trump administration slashing spending on science, Dr. Patapoutian's federal grant to develop new approaches to treating pain has been frozen. In late February, he posted on Bluesky that such cuts would damage biomedical research and prompt an exodus of talent from the United States. Within hours, he had an email from China, offering to move his lab to "any city, any university I want," he said, with a guarantee of funding for the next 20 years.

Man comes to the US from Lebanon. Starts out delivering pizzas, becomes a Nobel winning neuroscientist. Trump freezes his funding, he gets an email from China offering to move his lab β€œany city, any university I want" with guaranteed funding for 20 years.

What are we doing?

As I commented elsewhere, it's somewhat of a common pass time for neuroscientists to shit talk him. He's a total grifter. Possibly trust his advice on... Retinal axon regrowth after nerve crush injury, but I've read those papers and they also had serious flaws.

It's somewhat of a hobby among neuroscientists across the world to shut talk him

But yes, for a "neuroscientist", I've never seen him come to any of the rather frequent neuroscience seminars.

I saw him once give a guest lecture for undergrads about an old paper of his (that when I read it, missed a critical control - he put survival factors in retinal cells in a nerve crush assay and saw increased axon regrowth, but didn't correct for increased cell survival/much healthier retina??)

Maybe it's different in comp sci, but biology can be slow! I'm mostly going by what I have been informally told by someone in a position to know.

That's not super uncommon for labs. It usually takes several years to get something even submitted and then sometimes as much as couple years of revisions. It does certainly mean he isn't running a large lab with multiple projects running.

01.06.2025 04:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

word on the street is that he is effectively no longer a professor at stanford. I don't think he really has a lab anymore. Most lab websites include lab members, but not even his stanford lab website lists any lab members.

What I don't love about the hippie portrayal is the fear that consideration of cruelty and slavery might be dismissed as hippie nonsense. We need all the examples of empathy being core and not dismissible.

my boomer (?) take is that the cost of a single ticket to see a movie in theaters should be less than the cost of buying that movie when it comes out on dvd/blueray/streaming. Yes, the theater experience, but you also pay ridiculous premiums on snacks to subsidize the cost of that experience.

Cory Booker giving a 25 hour speech: everyone loved it, raised his profile

Van Hollen flies to El Salvador and meets Abrego Garcia: everyone loved it, raised his profile

Schumer publicly caved: everyone hated that
