Leadership’s perception on AI’s capabilities is what scares me the most.

When I openly express doubts about the benefits of "A.I."-assisted software engineering, I will often get responses that really do sound a heck of a lot like "Shut up and drink the Kool-Aid!"

It's looking increasingly like a religion.

There are mass layoffs that companies can justify and employees will understand: like when the company's survival is at stake (e.g. a startup running out of money), or business has taken a terrible downturn (eg TomTom's navigational devices no longer selling)

But during an ATH?

In 2025, my new washing machine / drying machine takes 3-5 seconds to β€œboot up” just so I can *select* the program

In 1990 I remember our washing machine took 0 seconds to β€œboot up” because you just had a physical switch to select the program

Sometimes progress feels backwards

There should be two official sets of rules for golf. One for professionals and one for amateurs. Most amateurs already play with a different set of rules today anyways.

Exactly, and you can't really blame hiring managers for wanting to build the best teams that they can from the pool of candidates that are available.

You have a great point there, and that's especially true around 2022. I think the bias has always existed to some extent because it signals a certain level of ability in the candidate. Maybe companies are leaning into "safer" candidates today and so hiring managers are leaning into this bias more?

Five years ago, coding was the easy part, and knowing what to code and promoting it (talking to customers, positioning, sales, etc.) was the hard part.

Right now, coding is still the easy part, and knowing what to code and promoting it is the hard part.
