I think it's great to have nuanced, good faith disagreements, in an appropriate time and place!

It's incredibly fucked up that a beginner could post art looking for help, and then spend the next week being relentlessly made fun of with endless mocking imitations of what they posted.

the only advice I'll give to people about how to "make it" is that you need something to show people if the opportunity comes. it doesn't matter if no one on social media saw it; that's still your body of work and it's a way better portfolio than just saying "I want to someday"

Every time I play Mario Party I get the urge to make a game like it and my mind inevitably starts wandering into coming up with ways to implement the board game part.

To be clear, this isn’t an attack on criticism which is deeply important and helps inform while giving perspective. What I take issue with is folls acting like they’re coming from the mountain top with giant screeds they deem absolute. Crit is the start of a conversation. Not an end.

That lack of openness also causes so much stagnation in creative growth! Why hold yourself back from the opportunity to like something new? Or try to keep others from liking a thing you’re not into? Seems both silly and awful to me.

Personal taste is important but an openness is necessary in a collaborative environment. Otherwise just make the thing on your own and don’t bring folks in.

When it comes to art and storytelling, I think it’s important not to mistake personal preference for absolute law. Oftentimes, folks conflate the two and loudly say a thing must be A instead of B simply because they don’t like the latter. They frame it as if it’s nonnegotiable.
