One of the knitting physicists conducting the study the original video mentioned also suggested they should do that, so maybe in the future? Large YouTube channels plan out their content months in advance, so I wouldn’t expect to see anything right away anyway.

yes— in the book by Lerner that I mentioned in the blog post, she makes the point that when you’re making an apology, the focus shouldn’t be on commenting on the person’s reaction or feelings—it’s on taking responsibility for your own hurtful words & behavior.

I’ve heard an even worse one: “I’m sorry IF you were offended.” It’s like, DON’T EVEN BOTHER… 🙄

Yeah, I didn’t really watch them before, so I can’t see myself suddenly running out & doing so, unless maybe if it has to do with knitting & science. Even then, though, I feel like I’d rather just watch videos by Kristina Vike or Evie Unraveled.

Yes— the first pseudo-apology wasn’t really an apology at all, so it’s inevitable people will be skeptical of their second attempt. I think I’m mostly just glad they finally took the video down…

I think they squandered an opportunity by being defensive & dismissive & justifying themselves the first time around. After that, many are going to be justifiably skeptical of any subsequent attempt at an apology.

I agree it wasn’t accidental. I think the educator in me wants to believe that people can learn how terribly wrong they were and commit to doing (and being) better in the future. Time will tell.

That said, I can also understand and sympathize with anyone who feels it’s just “too little too late.”

I can see that, yes—healthy skepticism is often better than blind optimism.

Yes, unfortunately YouTube’s algorithm operates on the assumption that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

I just hope the videos that offer thoughtful corrections and commentary benefit from increased views as well.
