Made the mistake of reading some of the news, trying to see whether the shutdown might finally be ending.

I sometimes see headlines, and that’s about the limit for my mental health. Now I have the pit of anxiety again, hopefully passes in its normal few days 🙃😵‍💫

Turns out the earlier beech nuts were all unripe. Starlings (invasive jerks) were ripping them free. The good beech nuts have fallen just this week past.

What a fantastic read! Congrats to you, and to the whole neighborhood.

Critters are well fed this autumn. Hope to see lots of chipmunks and squirrels next year, and even more owls and foxes the year after that.

In addition, the lanternflies are here en masse and have been added to the birds’ menu.

It’s been a mast year for possibly every nut tree in the neighborhood. And they all went in succession! Beech, then chestnuts, black walnuts, hickory, oak. Even my baby buckeye has a few conkers hanging from it.

Ah nice. We didn’t have an extension cord long enough for where we had our little log structure, so had to keep applying more fire.

Sending you and your mycelium good vibes!

Could you (or anyone) DM me whole are talking about, or send me a clue? I appreciate the information in this thread and would like more context.

Ellis George sent a draft portion of the brief to K&L Gates co-counsel, who it seems failed to check anything.

How fun! Keep them moist and do a good soaking for 24-48 hours when the fall flush is due to start! What did you do to keep your wax melted when you were out there? My small crucible and propane torch is less effective than I’d care to admit.

All my 2yo wants to play with are sports balls and rocks, or just generally being outside (e.g., puddles). Why do we even have toys.

I’ve been looking at the data more, and I think the heavier I am, the more calories I burn daily—as long term trends.

I’ve begun RTO again this week and I now walk 4-5 miles per day, much of it carrying a decent backpack. Desperately need a rest day.

Actually I was close to 2050 or 2100 all last year too. I’m carrying a toddler around, and I weigh a little more, and my resting heart rate is higher. I’m so curious whether this average will go back down now that my iron issues are sorted and I can function better!

Oh I meant to add earlier: for the past 6+ months I’ve had very little energy, due to severe iron deficiency. Barely moving from the couch, ZERO leisure exercise. I’m 15 pounds heavier than before, since having an baby.

Average monthly calories burned? About 2050.

Or at least eat less of it. I mean, this is all in the context of assuming you want to lose weight.

So if you want to lose weight, you need to eat less. That’s it. You need to eat fewer calories over time. You need to find ways, mealtimes, and foods that leave you satisfied and full, on fewer calories.

Know a food that tastes good but is calorie-dense without leaving you full? Don’t eat that.

So you could work out like crazy, and many aspects of your body will be healthier, but in the end it won’t change your calories equation. (Some can quibble with burning fats vs glycogen at different rates when exercising, and fine. But that’s a smaller factor.)

When you have a big day, the next day your body tends to encourage you to rest more. Indeed, I would go particularly hard on Sundays and do jack all on Mondays (office job). Also, a lower resting heart rate means fewer resting calories burned. So it all averages out!!!

I was skeptical. I’ve had a Fitbit for many years. During Covid, I was particularly active, getting in longer runs, weights, heavy yard work in the summer, very long evening walks, etc. But scrolling back through years of data, my annual and monthly averages are right around 1950. Crazy!

The Exercise Paradox Studies of how the human engine burns calories help to explain why physical activity does little to control weight—and how our species acquired some of its most distinctive traits

Recent studies have found that over longer ranges of time, we all burn pretty much the same daily calories, ~1900 for women and ~2600 for men. Like, daily averages over a month or longer. For example: www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-....

Turns out it’s pretty much all about calories in. Calories out is, over time, a total wash. 🧵

I don’t think they’re trying to be mean! Well, I don’t know your kids, just mine and the neighborhood’s etc. Some of it is exploring cause and effect, a lot of it is seeking attention.

When I get back to normal, my son is going to be so surprised! His momma is sproingly and alive and creative and fun! Until then, accepting all the help my household can get. I can’t even work full time, and I’m the primary breadwinner.

I am finally hopeful!!!

They — often men — say things like “if you notice something strange with your body, tell a doctor! That’s how they caught my [rare cancer].” Guess what! I did! And no one listened until it got really, *really* bad!

Anyway, I can the infusion 10 days ago. The RLS is gone 🥳 but the fatigue will take another few weeks. I’m so tired of being disabled. I want to be able to goof around with my small child. I cannot do fun things, only the bare minimum.

Turns out progesterone can inhibit iron absorption! Wish my gyno had thought about that fact. Or acknowledged that I was distressingly fatigued!

My NP gave me meds to try for the RLS (which have their own side effects) and in the meantime, despite saying my iron was fine, referred me to a hematologist.

Within 5 minutes of talking to me the hema said I needed an iron infusion. She tested some other measures and things were DIRE.

Meanwhile, my RLS was getting *way* worse, and the commute to and from work was leaving me literally incapacitated. Before pregnancy I was a hyperactive athlete! Now I came home, lay on the couch, ate dinner, and went to bed.
