This encounter served as a good reminder that birdwatching isn't just about checking species off a list. It's about observing nature's patterns and understanding the exceptions - like a mother duck delaying her migration to care for her young.

Local birders told us these ducks usually winter here but leave by mid-March as the weather warms. Just as we wondered why this one stayed behind, we noticed the reasonโ€”a small, downy duckling paddling closely behind.

On a late March morning at a quiet reservoir in Moganshanโ€”a misty, bamboo-covered mountain region in eastern Chinaโ€”we spotted something unexpected: a spot-billed duck, still lingering in the water when it should have already migrated north.

While the flock migrated north, one spot-billed duck remained with its chickโ€”proving parenting trumps rigid schedules. Birding reveals life's negotiations with nature's rules.

Last week on a flight, I started reading Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. Itโ€™s about a swarm of orange butterflies that end up migrating to a place they really shouldnโ€™t be, which is a perfect example of how climate change is messing with nature. Highly recommend it. #lovenature

A tiny, vibrant bird with shimmering plumage in shades of deep burgundy, iridescent green, and white perches delicately on a mossy branch. Its striking white crest contrasts beautifully against its rich, colorful feathers.

An immature male Snowcap hummingbird. I love this transitional plumage as they develop all of their red feathers.

What a beautiful shot of the Spotted Towhee! I love their calls too โ€“ they have such a distinctive and melodic range. I actually snapped a photo of one last year as well

This is such an amazing shot! Iโ€™m honestly amazed at how this Pygmy Nuthatch is standing on the treeโ€”its legs and the ground look perfectly parallel!

Turns out, having more birds around might just make you happier! Birdsong and watching birds can lower stress, boost mood, and help us feel more connected to nature. Who knew a little chirping could go a long way?

Today, we can only hear the last call of the Kauaสปi สปลสปล through historical recordings. If you'd like to listen to its final call, you can find it in the Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (search 'Kauai Oo').
