Calgary could teach Toronto some lessons on how to build light rail The CTrain isn't perfect, but they've got more than a few tips for us.

NEW COLUMN: Toronto will soon be opening Line 5 Eglinton, and it has many design flaws. But if we had been humble, and asked Calgary for advice, Alberta would have gladly shared her greater wisdom with us. www.jakelandau.ca/p/calgary-co...

As much as you may hate it, America is one country on the world stage. I don't say that to minimize your resistance, but you should remember it when talking to people from other countries. Good people can be found in all countries and we know that.

Lmao they really are practicing

I liked the valley line and it doesn't seem too slow downtown.

These routes do not have sufficient demand for higher levels of service. The point is that they provide coverage in areas that are hard to serve, with narrow streets and low density. They also often run together when connecting with major terminals.

I have Sony xm5s and they are incredible. I tried some bone conduction headphones recently though and they were great too in all the opposite ways. It feels like magic

Canadian transit has higher ridership because it's more useful. Sprawl is part of that. But being poorer is not

The return of the Northlander! I hope it brings an increase in intercity rail projects. Hopefully we can also get a clear vision for rail transit in the CRD (Victoria).

Edmonton is underrated! I saw people cycling in -35 when I was there.

Just googled 100F and it was only that hot once where I live, but I do need to know if there's going to be ice. Any day over 25C is too hot lol

Anyways that's all my thoughts on the first video, happy holidays!

I visited Alberta last week and caught a snowstorm and some -35 weather. It's a unique experience if you are up for it, but I like it. As someone from western Canada I have to hate on Ontario, but Ontario Northland seems very good.

I'm glad you got the Rockies in the daytime! You should defiantly visit Calgary and Edmonton again (Go Flames). Both cities have nicer walkable areas than Winnipeg and excellent LRTs.

Love the western Canada content, looks like a fun trip. The Caboose you saw in the gulf islands was on Galiano Island and I believe it's a vacation rental. The Abbotsford airport is a cursed place lol I've never had a good flight there. Thankfully the floods have gone now at least.

Thanks for explaining this, hopefully the city can implement it. I saw there were municipal elections here recently, were they any good?

Interesting, what do you think they should be doing for safety?

I thought the downtown stations could use updating. More lighting, better visibility and maybe fare gates. I noticed multiple police officers in stations, but they weren't checking fares. I felt safe but I was also just riding it for the day.

The Edmonton lrt is definitely underrated. How many lrt systems can you ride in -35Β°? The wayfinding is surprisingly good and the views of the river valley are amazing.

I would say cascadia or list them. Referring to it as one region is definitely more common in America though. Similar to if I was talking about someone from the prairies, I wouldn't mean America even though the bioregion extends south.

28.11.2025 17:47 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think the point is that sometimes it is used by Americans but most British Columbians don't identify with it. It's really not that big a deal to be fair, so I don't Blame you for not knowing.

28.11.2025 05:49 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

There isn't anything north about Victoria either, so it doesn't really make sense. In BC you could also identify with the lower mainland, interior, North/South Island, Kootenays and more. The regional districts are pretty accurate imo as far as cultural/identity differences go.

28.11.2025 05:46 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Cascadia is sometimes used in BC, it's almost always in reference to the bioregion though. People here would say they're from BC, then the west coast, then Vancouver Island. So the west coast identity is most common.

28.11.2025 05:43 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah pnw is American. It's mostly Americans who include Vancouver in it in my experience. I'd never refer to the west coast as the pnw.

Pretty sure we were very close to doing it in Surrey, but didn't for similar reasons to why Toronto's streetcars are bad. But it's not directly because of them. While I get your point, comparing Toronto to the rest of Canada will annoy every Canadian.

22.11.2025 19:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah your right, better to just move on

17.11.2025 01:25 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

BC rail was also privatised in the early 2000s, not sure how directly it's related to this but it was a major scandal at the time. Pretty sure the line is still open and just seldom used.

17.11.2025 00:41 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If you think that proves anything you need to work on reading comprehension and statistics. The average quality (standard) is higher in Canada.

17.11.2025 00:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I can easily cherry pick 15 cities in western Canada with good urbanism. The original comment mentioned standards of urbanism. You gave your top 15 cities in America for urbanism. We are talking about standards, which includes all cities.

17.11.2025 00:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

There are 15 cities in Canada with a metro population higher than 400k. America has over 130. Canadian cities are smaller and have higher standards of urbanism.

16.11.2025 22:36 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

We really need more regional rail in BC. Can't wait to see more of the BC videos, glad you enjoyed your trip out here.
