Wherever you are, get to know your local emergency managers, their agency, & how you can support their work to keep your family safe.

It's been a big week in emergency management.

I have heard numerous times during my 15+ year career, I didn't know you existed, but I'm glad to know you do.

It takes us all working together to accomplish this mission.

Budgets are easy to cut, and grants are disappearing fast. The need to fund and staff local emergency management are critical.

Get to know emergency management.

Understand the EM function in your local area, at the state level, and though you have probably heard things, the federal level. Understand their staffing, their budget, and press your elected leaders to ensure they have the resources they need. Chances are, they do not.

I implore you, this month, take a little time to get to know emergency management. Understand their work in the 5 phases (prevention/protection, preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation).

If they are part of a public safety department, do they get the attention they need, or are they overlooked by the focus required by police or corrections? Are they a unit within a police or fire department, and as such are their operations influenced by the home department's scope of work?

What can you do?Ask about these people. Who are they? Do they have what they need to do their job? Are they getting cooperation from their partners or being ignored as departments huddle deep in their silos? If they are part of a chief elected official's office, are they appointed or hired on merit?

It is more important than ever that you take an active role in asking about the preparedness of where you live, where you work, where your kids go to school. All of these places should have someone in a role planning for your safety.

August in National Emergency Management Awareness Month. This is being observed for the first time. There are many changes going on in emergency management which affects us all.
