Increasingly I think a major function of β€œmasculinity” IS its crisis β€” a vehicle for the dominant & dominating group to justify focusing their social attentions primarily on themselves

I just wish weird psychosexual obsessions functioned the way they used to. 19th century weirdos aiming to end masturbation made us both a breakfast cereal and a tasty cracker. That NEVER happens today. Nobody tries to criminalize IUDs and accidentally invents a new kind of Milano.

why are billionaires so bad at doing the billions game? I mean, not rooting for them, like at all, quite the opposite, but I watch their plays, who they support, and they’re just so bad at directing/hyping an economy. it’s like money no longer matters to them and they just want more power. oh no…

I can’t begin to enumerate the ways the Corporation for Public Broadcasting made my life better, literally from my earliest memories until today. This is gut wrenching.

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

her parents had the last name Barber and they were like:

β€œWhat if we name our baby girl, Irish?”

β€œIrish Barber? I love it!”

(And honestly, I love it, too)

was amazed at how fast the tsunami waves traveled across the Pacific, saw reports that the waves were traveling at roughly 500 miles an hour, that’s like the cruising speed of a 747

that’s crazy fast, that means the waves were moving at about 1.4 miles a second

Sewers, pizza, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles –– this one has everything that's cool, comical and subterranean. It was a brilliant plan. It was executed perfectly. That is, until one fatal flaw brought the whole operation crashing down.

rather than focus on optics, Dem hopefuls for β€˜26 and β€˜28 need to find their goddamn backbone and ignore the consultants. we hate when you patronize us. you’re in a fight, act like it. Americans like ppl who fight for us and give a damn

and if you need a bipartisan role model: think Johnny Cash

Israeli soldiers and generals are turning their back on Netanyahu over Gaza Netanyahu’s forever war risks mutiny in the ranks and the highest level of the army

think they see tide’s turning for Israeli military, reservists refusing their call ups, military planners openly saying war meant to keep Netanyahu in power/delay his corruption trial and operation lacks military goals, also Orthodox party left his coalition

It's not though. We've just been capitalism pilled to think that the only way to get people to do stuff is with money. The whole point of the universal basic income pilots is that humans will actually do cool shit if theyre not terrified of being unable to eat, clothe and house themselves

love that a Native American man in a dugout canoe reached Spain long before Columbus sailed the oceans blue in 1492, and Columbus was aware of it, thus inspiring him to sail West for what he believed was Asia

don’t love the painful irony that this inspired Columbus

in high school, made it onto ESPN for chasing an all-American RB prospect. he started at our 5-yard line, I forced him inside, he broke through our D, then I chased him the length of the field and caught him at the 1-yard line, unfortunately the ref ruled that he scored. the hosts said I had no quit

If we are going to talk about legendary wrestlers of the 1980s who are no longer with us, I’d much rather talk about Roddy Piper.

An iconic character and larger than life presence, Roddy was a good man, too.

He also courageously went public about Pat Patterson being a sexual predator. (1/3) 🧡🀼
