I needed to be a bit quicker with this one. Started to get a bit chilly as the sun started to drop over the very beautiful Catalan Pyrenees, Northern Spain.

A painting of the spot in which the last painting I posted was painted - there's probably a simpler way to say that! If you are interested, I've added one or two of the recent paintings from a trip through the Haut Verdon and Alps Provencal to my website davidalbiston.com

27.07.2025 17:47 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Lol. I reckon you could argue both. I know what you mean. I agree about the lighting, although I suspect I need to be a little more sophisticated with it.
14.07.2025 21:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0oil painting of fields in the Barronies region of France
Spent the morning photographing some paintings for my website davidalbiston.com which always turns out to be trickier than I feel it should. Lighting, colour balance, never straightforward - tips welcome. Some seem to create more than their share of difficulties! #oilpainting #landscape #alps

A recent painting from Le Devoluy region, France, with the muted colour and snow patches of early spring. There has been quite the change over these last couple of weeks with an explosion of spring colour. Back out next week to tackle the spring greens!
27.04.2025 12:01 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Still some good spring snow in the mountains along with high spring temperatures. This one from last week, oil on board, 20x30cm.
08.04.2025 15:08 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0It it not (as usual) simply intimidation and corruption out in the open? The US is such a prized export market that the threat of tariffs creates a response - deals, bribes, etc. A bullying tactic knowing tariffs cause bigger problems for trading partners than the US.

Given the time of year here's one with a bit of snow. The path runs through the pine forest along the valley bottom. Painted two, maybe three years ago. Oil on canvas. #alps, #oilpainting, #bourgdoisans
12.12.2024 09:37 β π 18 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Perhaps even more bizarre is the glee to which many ordinary people see the dismantling of regulations, work place protection, safety nets and tax revenue as a good thing that they cheer on.

04.12.2024 10:44 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree, it is accepted wisdom that a website is a good idea although I am genuinely interested in which link in the chain it is. As a point of sale for artists with a large media footprint I understand, but for others, does it fulfill a role, that, say, instagram doesn't?
28.11.2024 12:42 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Interested to know if anybody has thoughts on (or links to) good artist's websites? Mine ticks along but I increasingly wonder about the function and value - are website galleries, blogs etc, increasingly redundant?

27.11.2024 17:01 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Oil painting of a waterfall through a forest in spring
Had a mind to tinker and update my website but it's a beautifully sunny, cold day so I'm heading out the door with the paints. Before I go, here's one with some bright spring greens. Oil on canvas 50x50cm. #alps #oilpainting #ecrins
27.11.2024 09:42 β π 22 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Painting can be an odd thing. Solitary and introspective one minute and the next, blowing a trumpet as you wheel out the latest daub. Social media, for me at least, feels a slightly awkward no man's land between the two. πΊ Col du Sabot, oil, 41x33cm #oilpainting #alps #pleinair
24.11.2024 10:43 β π 20 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Really nice. That diffuse winter light of northerly places is very special.
23.11.2024 12:52 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thank you for saying. Paintings, I feel, can also suffer by having to overcome the filter of the screen, I'm glad some of this one crept through.
23.11.2024 12:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Oil painting of an alpine hillside in Autumn
I'm reasonably sure I'm a bad judge of my own paintings. Possibly the when, where and how a painting developed that means I'm invested in them in a different way? Case in point, here's one high among the red, orange and faded green of Autumn in the Alps. #oilpainting #alps #ecrins
23.11.2024 09:37 β π 15 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I agree, it works really well. Interestingly, with paint I think the opposite is usually true, and I'm wondering why? Particularly with snow blues, purples, pinks etc. often provide the light and depth.
22.11.2024 17:22 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sometimes the palette is more interesting than the painting, that's when I know things have taken a turn for the worse!
