A customer car that could have been fixed with an inexpensive used engine now needs a new one, which is either very expensive or hard to get (or both). That customer then buys a replacement used car. Demand goes up, prices go up, supply actually goes down.

It's not just the 677,000 cars removed from the market. It's all the cars those cars could have kept running. I have been in the car repair business for 30+ years now, and the way you couldn't get used parts (or even cores) for popular vehicles for years afterwards affected the market hugely.

And then you get the COVID effect. A market that was forced to depend on new cars over a decade was suddenly bereft of new cars. All of which were expensive to produce, so when manufacturers could restart production they concentrated on the most expensive, highest profit vehicles.

Add to that continued government regulation of electronics and safety systems - which are mostly a good thing - and the base cost of making any vehicle goes up. I'm not sure tiny hatchbacks need backup cameras, but the government says they do.

It's a trend that started with cash for clunkers; over 600,000 used cars - most of which were still usable - were removed from the market and destroyed. Making things worse, they were literally destroyed, removing their parts from the repair market and making it unaffordable to fix other old cars.

The new PlayStation Secret Lair from Wizards of the Coast should have had a Gran Turismo drop that was all pilots and vehicles.
