I'm always conflicted about learning mishnayot in his memory--he was a big fan of Jewish learning, not so much of the belief in neshamot having an aliyah. But maybe I'll do it to be contrary. I think he'd appreciate that.

Shiva asar b'Tammuz is the yahrtzeit of Prof. Mark A. R. Kleiman. I used to re-up my story about him on Twitter every year, but I'm not there and the story is probably gone. He was very much larger than life, and his work, which I encountered almost 15 years ago, continues to shape how I think.

This man protested for democracy against the Maduro regime and came to America, where he thought he would be safe.

We sent him to a gulag for it.
