Beach Season in NYC is Just Beginning. For New Lifeguards, It Began Months Ago.
The Parks Department now has training centers in high schools across the city, and is hoping to change the culture of the beach watchers.
I spent some time at lifeguard training classes this year, where prospective guards are ready to hit the city's beaches and pools -- but first have to make it through 16 weeks of laps, rescue exercises, and CPR.
