That's why safe infrastructure shouldn't be up for public debate.

Had a close call on my bike ride home today. Riding downhill, a man cut me off in the bike lane to turn right (even though the light was red and another car was stopped in front of him). I had to slam on my brakes. I shouted at him through his window while he queued. He wouldn’t even look at me.

America’s plan to protect pedestrians failed. A young woman’s death reveals why. U.S. officials adopted Europe's Vision Zero initiative, but many cities have seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities despite efforts to improve road safety.

Vision zero failed in the US because car drivers don’t care about people outside of cars.

“The real problem isn’t that Vision Zero doesn’t work; it’s that many places have adopted that slogan without making any real changes,” said Amy Cohen, who founded @familiesforsafestreets.org. “It has not been implemented with the resources & commitment & courage from legislators that is required.”

The reporters actually found a facebook comment from 2017 shortly after the road diet began where the driver who ended up killing the pedestrian complained to a city official that he was “stuck in the traffic hell you created.”

(IMO, hell would be living with someone’s death on your conscience)

I feel like the 40k/yr number is hard for people to grasp. That’s 100+ per day, or a 9/11 every month. It’s crazy.

I'm so fucking tired of so many people being killed in traffic crashes. I'm so fucking tired but I'm also so, so fucking angry.

I use obscene language because what is obscene is over 40,000 people/year dying in preventable crashes in the US, 7,000 or so who are merely walking, and society just 🤷🏻‍♀️

Help me if I'm missing something but Chicago doesn't implode when people can't park their cars on certain arterials when it snows.....so why the fuck can't we implement some dedicated 24/7/365 bus lanes on these same streets? 🤔

05.12.2025 02:41 — 👍 10    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

Here's an argument for bus lanes I haven't seen before. Traffic jams are caused by drivers, not transit riders. It's unfair to make transit riders suffer alongside drivers from traffic jams the drivers alone caused.

I just love the new pedestrian plaza in my neighborhood. It's so refreshing to have a little oasis from cars, a place where people sit with friends for lunch, kids play, special community events are held, folks play dominoes, etc. Cities need more of this.

This is willful negligence on the part of both the city of San Diego and Caltrans. They both know there is a large unhoused population living there and not only do they do nothing to slow down speeding cars, they've allowed the construction at Perry's to block the sidewalk and bike lane.

It is literally impossible to legally cross this street.

Drivers have the 5 freeway through this corridor. We don't need another parallel redundant highway for cars, we need a safe route for pedestrians and bikes. Especially with dense housing coming online at Perry's and Midway Rising.

This makes me furious. I've been begging the City of San Diego and Caltrans for years for better bike and pedestrian facilities on Pacific Highway. Major corridor which cuts diagonally through the middle of the city and for which there is no good detour outside of a car.

Ok, just thinking about our Blue Line in SD which is painfully slow downtown, because it doesn't have signal priority because a handful of loud drivers complained about being delayed by the train crossings.

They mean run the train less frequently, so that the gates aren't down as much

Sorry, after having drivers yell at me countless numbers of times to "get in the fn bike lane" where none existed, I don't trust a driver's opinion of what is a "perfectly good bike lane."

If tiny cars are too dangerous to be allowed on our streets, think of how it feels to be a pedestrian or cyclist!

If a large portion of households went down from two cars to one car, it would be transformative for walking, biking, and transit in the city

I understand driving for Uber is a hustle, but I have zero tolerance for reckless driving. If you endanger my family or others on our streets, I absolutely 1-star and report it, unapologetically. A gig economy job is not a license to gamble with other people's lives.

There's no perhaps, if you can't see, it's your responsibility to safely slow down or stop until you can gain visibility.
