Just want to take a moment to shout out the international reporters helping us get the real story out. When an 80-year-old veteran with a walker is hauled off with his hands zip-tied behind his back, and the media spins it as a β€œthreatening breach” of a police barricade

A week long holiday on the Ardnamurchan peninsula provided some incredible Pine Marten encounters from the comfort of our accommodation. Amongst Atlantic rainforest, these mustelids evoke strong feelings of wilder times gone by.

As a biologist, I'm appalled at pride the White House takes in willful ignorance.

In yesterday's executive order about NPR and PBS, their first example of "the trash that passes for `news' at NPR and PBS" is the statement that "banana slugs are hermaphrodites."

But this is unequivocal fact.

Booker: Strom Thurmond’s record always kind of just really irked me. That the longest speech on our great Senate floor was from someone who was trying to stop people like me from being in the Senate. So to surpass that became more important to me.

I am deeply concerned with the pressure on scientists in the US: naked censorship, staffing reductions, and promotion of pseudoscience by the government.
I have signed the #DefendResearch declaration posted on www.defendresearch.org, under the number 3615.

The @standupforscience.bsky.social DC rally is on.

What we are hearing from around the country:
"this is big!"
"biggest rally I have seen around here in years and years"

The public cares about medical research--and students, GenZ, and other people too are ready to stand up.

Dear colleagues,

The past month has brought unprecedented changes in how the U.S. supports science, scientists, and scientific funding. These changes have shaken our community to the core, as our colleagues, peers, and friends are fired and harassed, our funding is threatened, and our science is censored. Our hearts go out to our members who have lost their jobs, livelihoods, and funding.

The Paleontological Society (PS) stands with our members in these uncertain times. We believe that science should be open to everyone, that scientists should be supported at every government level, and that the benefits that scientific research bring to society should be championed.

Dear colleagues, The past month has brought unprecedented changes in how the U.S. supports science, scientists, and scientific funding.

Despite these dramatic policy changes, the PS remains committed to supporting our community and advancing the science of paleontology through research, education, and advocacy. We affirm that one of our strengths as a Society is our diverse membership, and that such diversity is integral to the advancement of our Society, and to the continued rigor and ingenuity of paleontological research. We will continue to foster an environment that encourages the free expression and exchange of scientific ideas. Please note that the PS offers an emergency fund [paleo.memberclicks.net] for members who are experiencing a financial emergency, if that is helpful.

The PS and our Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) are working with peer societies and government organizations to advocate strongly on behalf of science, scientists, and scientific funding. If you are interested in helping with this work, please reach out to Dr. Tom Tobin (Chair of GAC, ttobin@ua.edu [paleo.memberclicks.net]). Also consider contacting your elected government officials, and/or attending the Stand Up for Science March [paleo.memberclicks.net] in Washington DC on March 7 with other PS members.

For our US members, you can find your elected officials and how to contact them here: https://www.usa.gov/elected-officials [paleo.memberclicks.net]. Our Government Affairs Committee advises that phone calls and visits to local offices may be more effective than using online forms. If you make contact, emphasize the immediate and direct effects of specific science policy changes on your ability to conduct your job as an educator, scientist, researcher, and other positions.

Sincerely,

Rowan Lockwood and the PS Executive Committee

I’d like to see someone with AI outperform any educated paleontologist. I’ve asked AI models questions about paleo just to test them, and they very confidently state false info about critical details like locality. The AI models are particularly bad with that kind of qualitative information
