Good post. It's worth mentioning that 'Vifax' which is recommended in the article was phased out.

Everybody makes mistakes learning, it's nothing to be ashamed of. That doesn't mean you shouldn't also know what a high standard looks like in practice, learn the rules, aspire to improve.

The modh coinníollach is just the conditional tense, it's used in conversation all the time, anytime you want to say "I would -", 'thógfainn - I would take'

I've never heard someone from a Gaeltacht for whom Irish is their main language make a mistake with the copula and I'm told native Spanish speakers don't mistake 'ser' and 'estar'.

Those are core features of those two languages that must be learned aren't they?

Donegal Irish gets it the worst, even some people with hardly a word of Irish like to correct it or complain about it! Have to give you that one.

I don't know how you can teach a language without being prescriptive at all though, to learn a language you need to learn the grammar don't you?

All change is not equal. In the case of minority langs wholesale changes in the direction of the larger langs that threaten them tend to be a sign of decline & are typically accompanied by a losses in transmission & L1 speaker numbers & a greater number of L1 majority lang speakers in the regions.

It's important also not to confuse implied grammatical structures and actual grammatical errors ("'bhfuil" instead of "an bhfuil" etc)

Their grammar might differ from prescriptive school grammars, but that’s an issue with those resources.

eg “I'm after losing me shoes” might be considered poor English in ignorance when it's entirely grammatical within the realms of dialect, sociolect, register, etc

The article at that point is talking about a particular ideology, it is not talking about learners or L2 speakers.

The problem with so-called 'new speaker academics' is that they often assume to speak for L2 speakers and learners when in fact they do not.

The majority know nothing about them.

Some prefer the term L1 or first language, but generally when people speak of 'native language' that's what they mean, someone who acquired a language as a baby rather than learned it as a child or adult.

You could argue that in Hiberno English 'native speaker' has a different meaning I suppose!

I don't believe they are the same things. If I'm uncertain whether to use 'is' or 'tá' I'll feel anxious, these mistakes are not the same as the linguistic variations that arise among native speakers of healthy languages.

Nobody has to feel anxious about it, but many do, it is natural.

I think that anxiety is a natural part of learning, it's like a performance, we're self-conscious because our mouth (if we're doing it right) has to move in ways that feel unnatural.

It's a part of the process, like messing up the grammar and feeling like a fool (if we're lucky enough to notice!)
