Leftists really have to prioritize public libraries in budget fights.

Democrats Must Embrace War Mindset We have exited a long period of peace and entered into a struggle not unlike war, in which all the old certainties have gone malleable and the future of the republic is at stake.

This whole article is really good and worth a read. Let's fight.

"Freedom. Equality. Democracy. I don't really care how well these poll. They're the truth. That truth is worth fighting for."

Obligatory "Oowee!"

Same deal here. In addition to the annoying but true fact that exercise helps depression, focusing on getting a kick right during drills or avoiding getting punched in the face clarifies what's important.

I use "fight the fight in front of you" as a mantra against overwhelm.

you can't do this alone

the scale of the problem is too large

so find your piece of the work

and find how it fits with others' pieces

and don't give up

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

The reason you're having trouble concentrating if you are here in the US is because we're basically being chased around by serial killers and being asked to disregard the fact.

There are a lot of bad things happening all at once, and it’s overwhelming to think about how to meet moments like this.

Jean says to focus on 1 or 2 things that you care about, understand fairly well, and are either local or involve a topic where you’re likely to have influence and find community

Sick and tired
(Disclaimer: trans is at the head for a reason, but all else is random. Getting distracted by what should go where is exactly the petty distraction they want.)

The Stars and Stripes Forever - A Call to Sincere Citizenship As we speak, great crimes are being perpetrated against our nation.

β€œThe existence of our nation depends on conscious, sincere citizenship. A republic cannot be sustained if dedication to it is cringe. Neither can it survive if awareness of its peril is limited to political hobbyists.”

I know this sounds weak, I know it.

But kindness is one of the few things we carry that can make a difference for each other.

We can’t undo all this hate, but we can still make life a little easier for others.

This Speaker vote should remind all of us that literally nothing Republicans try to do will be easy, or a foregone conclusion. And often, they are going to have to come to Democrats to enact anything at all. We have lost power but we are not powerless.

Counting, This New Year’s Morning, What Powers Yet Remain To Me
by Jane Hirshfield

The world asks, as it asks daily:
And what can you make, can you do, to change my deep-broken, fractured?

I count, this first day of another year, what remains.
I have a mountain, a kitchen, two hands.

Can admire with two eyes the mountain,
actual, recalcitrant, shuffling its pebbles, sheltering foxes and beetles.

Can make black-eyed peas and collards.
Can make, from last year’s late-ripening persimmons, a pudding.

Can climb a stepladder, change the bulb in a track light.

For four years, I woke each day first to the mountain,
then to the question.

The feet of the new sufferings followed the feet of the old,
and still they surprised.

I brought salt, brought oil, to the question. Brought sweet tea,
brought postcards and stamps. For four years, each day, something.

Stone did not become apple. War did not become peace.
Yet joy still stays joy. Sequins stay sequins. Words still bespangle, bewilder.

Today, I woke without answer.

The day answers, unpockets a thought from a friend

don’t despair of this falling world, not yet

didn’t it give you the asking

Billionnaires stole your living.

Not immigrants. Not minorities. Not people who follow a different religion.

Billionnaires. Noone needs a billion to live. Billionnaires could easily give you the money you lack and not notice the loss. They do not. They never will.

That's a shame, but you have to do what's best for your health.

Visiting ghost towns like decrepit mining outposts may be feasible because your feet would be on solid ground the entire time. You could also invest in a drone for remote exploration.

Regardless, books have your back (or elbow).

A stack of magazines titled "American Ruins" in bright red, all-caps font waits to be purchased in a grocery check-out lane rack. A water tower is pictured: "SLOSS". It's the name of a town or company but the word "loss" nestled inside it enhances the despair in the magazine's title.

Seeing this in the grocery store checkout line with the tabloids feels a little on the nose
