power goes to those who show up, and a lot of these local governance bits are done in ways that only people who aren't at work in the middle of the day can show up.

It's was both eye opening that noone else ran for this position and how impactful that position was. Where do you find someone versed in how to protect a drinking water system from earthquakes? well we found them and convinced them to run for an unpaid elected position lol.

Many of these boards are filled with extremely passionate & knowledgeable people. i've never been schooled as hard as I have than when talking to an elected water board member who was working on upgrading our water system to deal with earthquakes. dude was incredibly talented, and he was unpaid

it's also super easy to get involved with. Local districts and stuff don't have a ton of funding and are powered by volunteers more often than not, especially at the decision making level. It's pretty easy to run for a seat on a local board.

An eloquent image:

Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults.

I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

My arms are noodles though. I had forgotten what it felt like to be sore after swimming lol.

Jumped in the swimming pool after like 10 years of not doing laps, and holy moly it was like riding a bike. Yeah, some of my bad habits (wobbling at the end of 100m, coasting for too long) came back, but i was able to swim 1700 meters!

I missed swimming. I'm definitely going to get back into it

If you think the ghosts in Pacman were in any way intelligent... i guess you would believe an autocomplete machine is intelligent.

Most experts acknowledge that a takeover by artificial intelligence is coming for the video game industry within the next five years, and executives have already started preparing to restructure their companies in anticipation.
After all, it was one of the first sectors to deploy A.I. programming in the 1980s, with the four ghosts who chase Pac-Man each responding differently to the player's real-time movements.

This is an insane thing to write about game development. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/28/a...

Anyway, the fight continues. Our community is stronger than this, and we'll keep working to have a County Commission that reflects the diversity of the county it's supposed to represent.

Hats off to the kid who said "Chair Harrington, I know you aren't running again so you don't need us to like you, but the rest of you are, and you do need us to like you". We need more energy like that in our community.

23.07.2025 06:10 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm very proud of everyone who came out and testified. Listening to 20 people in a row roast Kathryn Harrington was needed after that soul crushing presentation.

23.07.2025 06:10 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Their own presentation said that to get funding, the county needed to attest that they'd comply with ICE! It's pure absurdity to imply that we were misinformed, because if we were, the misinformation was coming from the county!

23.07.2025 06:07 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The way that Chair Harrington and commissioner Willey spoke down to the people present was also extremely condescending. The implication that if we opposed the path the county means we misunderstood the presentation is insulting as hell.

Boy I'm disappointed with the Washington County Board of Commissioners. Far too much trying to decide how much harm our community can take in exchange for money. The whole presentation they gave tonight was just a crushing demonstration of the banality of evil.

I mean, the statement is accurate because both republicans and democrats (nationally) bend over backwards for the billionaires who absolutely fucking broke it.

I asked Mehdi Hasan how many fascists he's deplatformed and he told me he just gets a new one, and I said it just sounds like you're platforming fascists and he started crying

If you have right wing family members or people who still listen to you... focus on this. They distrust "politicians" because "they lie all the time". Trump is just being a politician here. Promised something, never delivered it. plant that seed and nurture it in their minds.

15.07.2025 23:50 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

The most important part of the right tearing trump apart Epstein files isn't the contents of the files or trumps culpability, it's the fact that trump is dodging accountability. He promised something & failed to deliver it. He was lying about this, what about costs? Inflation? the entire maga thing?

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

any capitalist that wants to change the status quo just wants to be the one in charge. They like the system, hate the fact that they're at the bottom.

the transportation bill collapsing sucks. we really need the local road funding more than the highway stuff. Also increasing the gas tax would some way at getting rid of gas cars, and the increased transit money would help get rid of cars completely. those are good things to reach for.
