Thank you so much Izzy for this thread! I have long exhausted my ability to put the misery I feel about HE EDI initiatives into words. Here it is.

They suck in precious time of women in academic work places and fail to challenge the exclusionary work cultures. An alternative way is to equip and enforce ED&I within the higher leaderships (easier said than done) and require them to lead on the principles of equity, inclusion, & justice. /14

These committees operate on the promise to leverage support for equity from institutional leaderships but in reality work to rehabilitate the images of faculties & universities that often fall short on inclusion. They identify and reinforce the ‘easy wins’ that bring gold/silver/bronze awards. /13

On effectiveness, I say 1 more thing. The committee/pyramid approach to ED&I must end. I was a member of an Athena Swan committee in Leeds Uni for 2-3 years, a panel reviewer for AdvanceHE for 3 yrs, & a member of the University Gender Equity Committee in Sheffield for 2.5 yrs. It doesn’t work. /13

Women who do remain in the system (and represented by the lower blades of the scissor diagrams) do so with incredible sacrifices and resilience. Normalising them as role models is one of the worst things one can do and absolutely reinforces the broken culture in higher education /9

Even in relatively senior positions, it is paralysingly hard for women to say out loud and label what they experience as any combination of racism, ableism, ageism, homophobia etc mixed in with misogyny. No amount of data driven ED&I will change that culture in the academia /8
